Have dumb travel question. please help!
How can digital cameras and ATM and credit cards go through security at airports without being damaged?

X-rays don't affect them?

1. X-rays don't affect them. Magnets do.
Well magnets will damage ATM cards, I don't think they would damage flash memory found in digital cameras.

2. I just had a feeling they did......
but it's cool that they don't......I mean, everybody has cards/cameras when they travel.....so like DUHHHH, DK! ;)

hmmm. thanks. I was imagining having airport security going through my wallet.....was thinking something was going to happen to my memory card. :(

I haven't travelled in a LONG time, never been out of the country! :)

I flew to Europe last year with a Laptop, iPod, digital camera, and ATM cards. I didn't have any problems.

3. Okay, taking your question OT but where does everyone stash their passport while overseas?
I have always been curious where people put their passport when they travel.

I have a bra that has a pocket sewn into it but I travelled in a LOT of third world countries with a LOT of pickpockets in my younger days.... I used to stash my cash in there too. And yes, it DID give me extra boobage!! :7 I never minded the catcalls....

4. I've heard you are to make copies of your passport.......
and keep a record of what the document number is, in case it's lost or stolen.......

and keep some money on you, in case of emergencies......and notify your bank and/or credit card companies that you are travelling abroad so they don't put any stops on your account. :)

6. I do that too, and leave one copy at home and take one with me to stash in the suitcase
but I always carry my passport on my body overseas. I was just wondering what anyone else did.

I typically have a house-sitter when we travel who I trust with my copies, I've got too many animals to take care of and if they are trustworthy enough to take care of my pets, they are trustworthy enough to safeguard my document copies.

9. What does one do if one loses their passport?
Edited on Sat Aug-04-07 09:22 PM by Darth_Kitten
Have whoever has the copy fax it over?

I'm just curious what the procedure is. I don't want to leave any stone unturned........

11. I lived in Australia for a year
and my passport expired while I was overseas. The US embassy took care of EVERYTHING. I simply went to the consulate with my expired passport and got a new one - it was even easier than getting one in the states. I was in and out within an hour.

I suspect that if you needed to replace a passport your copies would come in handy. If you had them in your suitcase, with you, just take those copies to the nearest embassy and get a replacement.

7. When I travel I use a pouch that hangs around my neck.
I tuck this under my shirt with my passport and plane tickets inside. I also have a money belt that has a photocopy of my passport and cash in it.

I also leave another photocopy of my passport with someone back home.

8. I always use a neck pounch for my passport, ATM card, and extra cash
I make large ATM withdrawals to save on exchange and transaction fees, but I never carry more than about US$20 worth in my purse. The rest goes into the neck pouch.

I also wear the neck pouch while flying, so that in case I have to evacuate the plane in an emergency, I won't be without my ID or access to funds.

10. I had a Samsonite backpack with multiple pockets/compartments...
I kept my passport and CC in the deepest and most inaccessible one, my wallet with ATM card/Cash in the second most one, and nothing in the outer. Worked a-ok in Paris for 3 weeks. :)

12. Digital is fine.
Film will be ruined so if you do any film photography for some crazy reason either develop it before you go home or mail the film back to yourself.
