Please, Baseball God . . .
Let Bonds hit one more so the Giants can finally get rid of him.

1. I don't acknowledge him.
A-Rod will break his "record" in another 5-6 years anyway.

2. I just want him off my team . . .
and the Giants are only holding onto him right now for the *hype*.

3. I'm aiming a little higher...
hoping a lightstand falls on him and ends his career before he can damage the game further.

Terrible, but just.

5. Heh. That would be great.
But it's highly unlikely. You just deal until someone breaks it legitimately. He won't hold this record long.

7. Why single him out? The whole sport needs to be rebooted.
Who even knows who all is on steroids, who all is cheating? Half the players caught on steroids so far have been pitchers, so Bond is facing players as juiced as him. Mix that with corked bats, possibly juiced balls, games that are constantly manipulated to fit better into television schedules, and the absolute non-debatably worst commissioner in any major sports league at any point in the last century, and I can't help but think of the Star Trek:TNG episode which described MLB as fading away.

Selig's reaction to Bonds is perfectly representative. First, he has no realistic testing plan for steroids. Second, he promotes McGuire and Sosa in their home run race, then ignores Bonds in his. Third, Bonds is alleged to have used steroids and much evidence is submitted, but Selig has no serious investigation and makes no decisive action to learn the truth or punish Bonds for his actions. Fourth, with Bonds on the verge of breaking the most hallowed record in the game, Selig is crippled with indecision. First he won't comment. Then he decides he's not going to attend the record game, but still he won't comment. Then he decides that he'll sort of hang out at a few of the games at the appropriate time to maybe be there when the record is broken, but still makes no firm statement on the status of the record. Bud Selig is less decisive and more confused about the situation than the fans.

A little leadership would have gone a long way. Either flat out state that Bonds is a cheater and you will not recognize his record, or take the initiative in defending Bonds and the sport they pay you to defend. I don't even care which, I'd have just liked to see some decision so I'd know whether to cheer or boo. It's like watching a game and not knowing whether the losing team will be declared the winner the next morning. Why bother with it?

9. My feelings have nothing to do with this current "record-chasing" of his . . .
he has not been a 'team player' - is very arrogant - does not want to mix with the fan base - just plain spoiled rotten and is now doing his interviews to ward off the steroid talk. My daughter has worked with the Giants and has told me that he is stand-offish in the team clubhouse - has his own little area set up - lounge chair complete with video games where he spends a lot of his time instead of doing any of the *community charity work* that the other Giants players involve themselves in. It's all about "Barry" all the time.
Have you noticed that he is definitely not Mr. October? He has not had a good playoffs record. Instead of advancing the team - when he comes to bat it's "Barry time" - always trying to hit the homer instead of advancing those who might be on base. Sheesh.

My case is this - I want him off the Giants - make room for someone who is willing to give it his all for the team and not be the Prima Donna that Barry has become. My beef with him is his personality - period.

19. Oh. I don't care about personality.
I've never understood why people worry about anything other than what a player does on the field, personally. I mean, sure, if you're going to date him or start a business with him it might matter, but who cares? I've watched the press pick someone out, form an opinion of them, and slant every story just to destroy them. TO, Vick, Irvin, whomever. They tell one side of the person, and people think they know him. That person is almost always black, too. I can't think of a white player in anything but hockey who's gotten that "bad guy" label. Well, except Bill Romanowski.

I can't speak to his post season production. I've never followed the NL, so I don't even know how many times the Giants have made the playoffs. The few times I've watched Bonds, though, I've been impressed by his doing the opposite of what you say. He takes balls, he takes singles if that's what they are throwing. From what I saw, he was the only one on the Giants who did, too. But I've only seen him a few times, mainly when he comes up against the Astros (the one NL team I pay some attention to), so my observations are so limited they are worthless.

I say all that, but I hated Alex Rodriquez when he was with the Rangers, and cheered when they traded him, mostly because I think he has a divisive personality. So I'm a hypocrite. :)

21. Yeah - . . .
I would agree with your assessment that you're a hypocrite. :P

I think the Giants would do much better taking that incredible amount of $$ they're paying Bonds and acquiring some young talent who would be better team players and not have the personal agenda that Bonds has. It would be nice to have a cohesive team again.

8. OK, I know nothing about baseball, so don't kill me.
I understand all the hating on Bonds because of his...ahem...alleged steroid use. I also understand that this A-Rod chap is hot on his heels, and that this is generally considered a good thing.

My question is this: how do we know A-Rod isn't partaking of performance enhancing drugs?

Honestly, I know nothing of this, so I'd be grateful for the education.

10. I'm sure that steroids are pervasive within all professional sports now ...
Edited on Sun Aug-05-07 01:38 PM by Bullwinkle925
and that's a sad commentary. I just want Bonds gone because he has a rotten personality and has been a spoiled-rotten Prima Donna and does not mix well with his teammates. I'd like to see some fresh young blood on the team now - someone who is willing to be a team-player. I don't give a hoot about Bonds and his record-chasing. I think it's too bad that it isn't someone else doing it that has a bit more humility. Guess I'm just sentimental for the good ole days.

11. I read that when Bary Bonds was playing college ball he was so hated by his teammates that >
to cool the situation down the coach let the team vote whether to kick Bonds out. The coach figured the team would come to their senses and keep their star but they voted almost unanimously to boot him.
Coach then rescinded the deal.

12. wouldn't surprise me if that were the truth . . .
i liked his father, Bobby Bonds, when he played for the Giants, but I suspect that Barry was raised without learning the value of humility. I know that his teammates in the past could care less whether or not he was on the team. The Giants have built their entire publicity around Bonds for years now - I'm ready for him to be gone.

16. Willie Mays should have taken his godfather (to Barry) job more seriously.
There's some seriously deficient spiritual footing here.

By the way, most Cub fans I know were really glad to see Sammy Sosa leave for similar reasons. Sammy put on a good face for the casual fans but he was an extremely selfish player.

There are a lot of ballplayers who play the game with heart and dedication, treat the fans with respect, and give a lot back to the community.

I finally got to see him play in '97 at a Padres/Rangers interleague game in Arlington. He's one of those guys you'll want to tell your grandchildren you saw (along with Carew, Yaz, Killebrew, Fisk, Rice, Murray, Ripken, Clemens...)
