An all-black Google homepage saves 750 megawatt-hours of electricity a year.
http://gimundo.com/Articles/Daily/427/8/7/2007/‘Blackle’_Saves_Electricity_on_Internet_Searches

"In January, a blogger named Mark Ontkush wrote in his blog EcoIron that an all-black Google home page would save 750 megawatt-hours of electricity a year. What does that mean? We looked it up.

Turns out 750 megawatt-hours can power for an entire year:

-- 77 North American homes

-- 150 European homes

-- 268 African homes

-- 536 Asian or South American homes

-- 3,750 homes in Afghanistan

-- 6,000 televisions

-- 800 microwaves

Ontkush pointed out that an all-white Web page requires about 74 watts to display, where a black page requires only 59 watts. "

Here's the site:

Enjoy!!

2. Was just thinking that, but what would be the text color?
What do you think would be the least irritating to the eye?
Worth some thought.

13. white letters or yellow
One thing I like about DOS 6.22 a lot better than I like about windows is that you can change the screen color to black or dark blue and the lettering wi white. It is much easier on the eyes than black on white. Yeah, you can change windows, but not selectively. Most websites print in black, so reversing the screen color will make internet type invisible.

3. Won't Happen
People who don't like seeing B & W lines on everything around them will go to the white backgrounded competitor.

11. couldn't Google, Du, etc -
make it easier for the user to switch backgrounds?

Not everyone has Firefox.

Although, maybe we would - if all you smartypants would explain how to "do that" to us "just users", you know. :P

:hi:

4. People can do this themselves
without foisting it on me. I find Blackle unreadable.

5. How'd you do that?
I prefer in Word to use a blue screen with light font. I don't know how to do it for my computer as a whole though. How did you do that please?

6. Change the browser settings just like you would for Word.
As far as "computer as a whole", I don't know. Sounds like you're using some version of
Microsoft Windows, I can't recall how to do that with Windows.

10. Only if you're using a CRT
an LCD screen's backlight is always on, though it's typically a cold cathode fluorescent bulb that doesn't consume as much power as a CRT (regardless of what is being displayed on the CRT).

12. Bingo. But it would save strain on the LCD set's pixels...
Edited on Tue Aug-07-07 10:36 AM by HypnoToad
An LCD set typically uses roughly 1/3 the power of a comparably sized CRT. (Just don't buy three LCDs and still think you're gonna save in the end... )
