Oral sex can cause throat cancer
http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn11819

People who have had more than five oral-sex partners in their lifetime are 250% more likely to have throat cancer than those who do not have oral sex, a new study suggests.

The researchers believe this is because oral sex may transmit human papillomavirus (HPV), the virus implicated in the majority of cervical cancers.

The new findings should encourage people to consistently use condoms during oral sex as this could protect against HPV, the team says. Other experts say that the results provide more reason for men to receive the new HPV vaccine.

=============

Personally, I think I'll take the risk.

4. It does say its a good reason for men to get the HPV vaccine
so Im guessing it applies to both men and women.

7. I guess my point is that there needs to be a penis involved, right?
We're talking about blowjobs here and not oral sex performed on a woman. They're not clear on that in the article. I need to read more, I guess.

39. if the person
receiving the enjoyment has HPV, they will spread it to their partner. It's irrelevant whether the partner or the receipiant is male or female.

8. actually they mean both sexes
It's a function of exposure to specific HPV strains that shed on delicate tissues (i.e. mouths and genitals). nothing special about going down on men.

15. if you cut off the rolled part
and cut it lengthwise, it will function as a dental dam which can then be placed over the vulva.

11. And you are 250% more likely to catch the flu shaking five people's hands than just one.
And if you go in for five separate operations requiring blood transfusions, you are (or could be theoretically) %250 more likely to be infected with HIV than if you had only one operation.

I don't think I get the point. It's pretty obvious that you expose yourself to more of anything by participating in more of anything.

14. Let's run through the stats.
http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/o/oral_cancer/prevalence.htm

According to this site, it's the occurrence of oral cancer is 1 in 9,411 and that includes tobacco chewers and smokers as well. Let's say my giving head (or receiving it) makes it 250% greater, that makes it still roughly 0.03%. I'll take the odds. :hide:

20. Of course it does.
I don't smoke (well, I smoke 2 packs a year because I'm weak sometimes), but my point was that I'm sure that has an effect as well.

22. I hate headlines like that
I know they are trying to get readers but wouldn't "exposure to HPV causes higher risk of certain cancers" be more accurate? I mean, we know it raises the risk of cervical cancer, and there is a vaccine for it, so it's almost a moot point.

24. Joke all you want.
Check this site:

http://www.oralcancerfoundation.org/

Mu husband was 39 when diagnosed with oral cancer. He was a "social smoker". Treatment for oral cancer is THE worst. Sickly chemo, and radiation to your throat so bad he had a feeding tube and spit mucus every 30 seconds in a bucket for 6 months. He took it better than most, at stage 3, and lost 75lbs.

The Dr doesn't think his tumor was HPV+, but I'm going for my annual on Wednesday and having my gyno do the HPV test along with my pap, as every woman who hasn't had the vaccine should to see if they have the strains that could cause cervical cancer.

Oral cancer has a high recurrence rate. My husband finished treatment 03/06, quit smoking right at diagnoses in 11/05 and had surgery last Monday for a vocal cord polyp, which wasn't a polyp, it was mild dysplasia, aka abnormal cells left untreated could have turned into cancer.

Don't mean to lecture, but just be aware, this cancer is becoming more prevalent in younger people who don't smoke or drink heavily.

37. HPV does cause cervical cancer in women
they have a vacine to prevent it but the f*cking holy rollers are blocking it because getting a f*cking vacine may cause girls to become sexually promiscuous :eyes: Because HPV is assumed to only be a problem for girls/women, even insurance companies won't properly cover the cost like it does with other vacines. We all know that this is a country that still thinks women's issues are secondary. If the research shows that men too are at risk, maybe, just maybe, the HPV vacine will get the support that it should have and be given to both boys and girls with proper coverage and not blocked by some f*cking holy rollers.
