Whoever decided we should count in decimal was a moron.
If we counted in binary instead, we could count to 1023 on our fingers!

Or, from -512 to +511 if we used twos-complement. :silly:

3. its because we have 10 fingers
if we had 8 fingers, we could count in octal. and math would be MUCH easier.

6. I know that
but that's the OBVIOUS answer - ten fingers, decimal. Any moron could have thought of that. And they did! But a real hacker would have noticed that the finger up/down counting thing could be much more efficiently employed.

By the way, the reason why imperial units use twelves so often is also because of your fingers. People used to count by pointing their thumbs at one of the three divisions in each of the fingers on that hand. 12 divisons per hand and two hands meant that people could count that way to 144.

19. I hate to disagree with your Mum...
but I think it's because 12 is divisible by 2, 3, 4, and 6. Hence useful for trade (1/2 a dozen, 1/4 a dozen, etc.)

That way you can also play a chromatic scale and show phonemic divisions in human speech on your fingers.
