Have you ever fallen asleep at work?
The co-worker thread reminded me of the one time I did. Way back in my mid-twenties and I was out late the night before. I was sitting in a meeting going over some very detailed technical specifications. Propped my head up on my hand, next thing I knew, I heard someone saying my name over and over. I came to in front of my boss and our client so embarrassed that I wanted to die. Luckily, both of them laughed it off.

Anyone else ever drop off by accident?

I once saw him climb into the bustle rack of an M-109 howitzer for a snooze.

12. Yes, before I started taking Loestrin 24 Fe.
There used to be certain times in the cycle when I just could not stay awake. The urge to fall asleep would hit me very suddenly.

I'm grateful to whoever came up with that little pill.

13. Back in my twenties I did the same thing at a mtg w/AT&T
Fortunately, I think my boss was the only one who noticed, and she kicked me under that table to wake me up. Those people LOVED long, pointless meeetings.

Now I'm okay so long as the lights stay on. Turning off lights in a meeting room for a PowerPoint presentation is like dropping a roofie in my drink....

19. I've seen people sleeping on the floor of the NH House
A few years ago, there was an older fellow, a Republican, who sat down the aisle from several Democrats. One afternoon, he seemed to be snoozing quite comfortably right before a roll call vote. Three of us, all Democrats, decided to push the wrong button, figuring that this guy would wake up, look to see how we were voting, and then do the opposite. Well, he wakes up, looks at our voting stations, and immediately a big grin appears on his face. "Oh, I know what you guys are trying to do!" Thus was the plan of Reps. Sullivan, Splaine and McEachern thwarted! Oh, and don't worry, we switched our votes before the buzzer.

Curses, foiled again!

I guess I thought I could play it in my sleep; but I woke myself up when I played something awful. I kept drifting off then snapping out of it. I try to avoid Messiah gigs now, if I can afford to.

26. Oh yes.
Same situation as you. I was young, out too late the night before, and fell asleep in a meeting. My boss wasn't nearly as cool with it as yours.

Another time, during the peak of the tech boom when most employers were expecting us to work 12-16 hours a day without complaint, I used to regularly crawl under my desk to try and catch a little sleep here and there. During one marathon coding session (gotta hit those deadlines :eyes: ) I wasn't able to steal any sleep time, and by the third 18 hour day I was dead to the world. I put my elbow on my desk at one point intending to rest my head on my hand for "just a second". I woke up some time later with my face stuck to my keyboard and my boss poking me in the shoulder. It hadn't woke me up, but apparently the computers beeping had pulled the attention of half the office  That boss thought it was funny, but my co-workers never let me live it down.

With age, I've learned that a midafternoon nap is a good thing. That's why my current office has blinds and a lock on the door ;)

31. Only once during a summer job
I was a desk clerk for the summer. I started out on third shift. I was not used to third shift hours. On my second night, I fell asleep sometime around 2:45 a.m. and woke up around 3:30 p.m. Luckily, no one seemed to have been around during my slumber.

32. I've worked as a supervisor at various times and places.
I made it a point on 3rd shift not to check up the maintenance people too closely between 2 and 4 unless I needed them to fix something. Most of them would finish their jobs, catch a quick cat nap and then be ready to assist start-up when production people came on at 6 AM. I was sitting in the cab of an overhead crane one night running controls for an electrician and was running the trolley back and forth for him then waiting ten minutes while he adjusted the controls, then running the trolley again, etc. I thought I was going to die I was so sleepy up there!

Staying awake as a back shift warehouse supervisor was easy. On that job we all had plenty of work to keep us going all night, so there were no breaks at 2AM. I never worried about getting sleepy because I spent a lot of time walking around the warehouse trying to figure out where this one guy had his bed hidden. I never did find it or him!

33. Of course, I was an SO, it was practically a requirement...
That's Security Officer to you civilians. ;)

I worked 4 shifts in a row once, being a shift supervisor would do that to you, having to cover, on a weekend, for people that call in sick. What really sucked was that I called the office, and even the manager's at home, and they wouldn't come in, so I worked from 6 A.M. on a Saturday till 2 P.M. on Sunday.

On the second shift, around 9 P.M. I took second position, outside, it was summer, a nice night, I was supposed to stand outside the front door. Being a weekend, and an AT&T office building, no employees came in that night. I thought being outside would keep me awake, I was beginning to doze at the front desk. I leaned up against the building, then I had yet ANOTHER call at like 9:55. The 3rd shift lady who sat at the front desk came out and woke me up, first time I ever slept standing up! Another call-in, and I couldn't get a hold of my managers, at 10 P.M. so I was to work yet another shift.

The lady that came in on third shift asked me if I was there all day, and I said yes, so she told me to go in the backroom, an abandoned conference room, and take a nap, she would wake me if she needed me. I slept on the floor, so exhausted I didn't care how hard it was, until my normal shift started at 6 A.M. I was stiff for 2 days after that.

I wouldn't feel safe enough around the people I work with to close my eyes. I am serious. I would probably wake up with a warm sensation running down my leg and my hand in a bowl of warm water. I might wake up with "fire me" written on my forehead. Nope, not gonna close my eyes around these people.

Considering I work overnight, it's bound to happen.
