I spent my day today getting certified to do IV insertions (meaning IV after IV all day long). By the end of the day, I got them in people experienced nurses had trouble getting them in. :bounce:

I poked all but one person only once (it kind of surprised me I did so well). I poked him twice and then called IV therapy. My hospital is a big one, so it has a team of nurses who will just do IV's for people who are a tougher stick. Fortunately it keeps us from torturing people like that. I had someone once bruise 1/2 my hand. I'd hate to put anyone through that stuff. :(

2. That is a highly underrated skill!!! |

I'm one of those people you dread with weird veins (deep, and like to roll around). I hate going in to get blood drawn (or anything else that requires a needle going into a vein), and I almost always come out looking like a heroin addict. Bruise city. x(
You would be my new favorite nurse!

Maybe the right combination of strong and gentle is what worked for me. I get it in quickly while I pull the skin tight. Then it doesn't hurt much. Then, if I don't see blood immediately, I'll move it gently to the side. So far, it worked without bruises thankfully (after doing about 15-20 of them today and only unable to do one).

21. I feel sorry for your next patient now... |
|
You'll be thinking "If I can just get this in..."
Then you'll bust out laughing while inserting the needle...
And patient goes, "ow Ow OW WTF ARE YOU DOING?!?!?"

5. How can the patient help when you stick us? |
|
Seriously, I'm getting a lot of IVs, blood tests, etc.. Drawing blood is a piece of cake, but lately, the nurses have been stumbling with the IV/infusion thing. What can I do the help these wonderful people help me get well?

9. I guess it depends on the problem. |
|
Some medications that infuse in an IV can be more irritating and many nurses only learned how to do hand veins- sometimes that combo isn't the best one- an arm site with a larger catheter is preferable for some IV meds. Peripherals IV's should be changed every few days as well. Some people are fluid depleted and harder to get an IV into. Those are some major issues, but it's hard to know what to say otherwise. I'm sorry though.

17. My daughter would probably let me practice on her. |
|
Knowing her though, she'd learn it and then want to practice on me (she's considering going through EMT training next year when she turns 16). :scared:
