New Job is REALLY NEW for this kid (and great at the same time) |
|
New skills being taught patiently:
UNIX development (am a rookie) XML (serious) development (have modified before but not from scratch) VI (worst editor in the world (IMHO) but will learn) PHP (few months from now) shopping feed systems (amazing)
mix in:
constant client interaction Market Analysis (variety of products/industries) having full control of marketing changes based on above analysis
What is great is they are constantly telling me to be patient, not to worry, "I'll get it", they understand that it is difficult/new/challenging/etc...
I have never had this much training/patience in my life. Having come from being the "expert" to being exposed to completely new systems is somewhat difficult but as they tell me, "We hired you for your business experience, marketing experience, previous technical abilities and public relations skills, we'll teach you the specific tech side step by step. Don't worry. Your technical background will get you through it, whether or not you think it will now."
:wow:
I'm mentally exhausted when I come home now but it really is a good feeling.
How are YOU all? :hi:

2. Overheard at work some months back... |
|
Co-worker 1: "How do I edit a file in Unix?"
Co-worker 2: "You have to use vi. Hahahahahahaha"
Co-worker 1: "No man, I tried vi but all it did was print tildes on the screen."

The more you learn, the more indispensable you become.
I learned that the hard way.
It sounds like a great job. I'm very happy for you.
Say 'hi' to Mrs. Matcom, too-please.
:hi:

Such lovely arrays. Such lovely type juggling. So fast in a production environment. So bloody easy to scale. Makes me tear up just thinking about it.

Okay so Rove quits Merv Griffin finally meets grim death and *I* am completely SHUT OFF from DU. Yesterday
:grr:
No phones or internets or email (other than in house) no accounting system (either one of them the old or the new) NOTHING. A total void.
This time our friendly Comcast Tech (third visit from the same guy-out of 4 visits) blamed not "Static buildup" like the other tech did he blamed.... MER's BER's and squirrels-he showed me the cable line from the telephone poll that HAD either been eaten into or handly whittled down. He put 90 volts through the line to ward off any more "squirrel attachs"
We have internets at home and I have it hear at work again. Thank GOD. Our IT guy said that there were some serious internet withdrawals going on around the building...and it wasn't me.

I use ee when I need to edit files, cuz it's EASY. And if you forget a command they are listed at the top of the editor! :D Vi's supposed to be awesome though, if you ever get to the point that you can figure out how to drive it.
What flavor of UNIX? I do a lot of work w/ FreeBSD.
I've done some stuff with PHP, but I don't *understand* it. For me, making it *go* is good enough. LOL
You've got a lot on your plate, but it really is fun.
