Land a'goshen, it's snowin' fit to beat the band! |
|
Is what my nana would say if she were here (RIP) and looking out the window. (Although if you think about it, what the hell does that phrase even MEAN? :D) Supposed to get 5 inches or more followed by freezing rain, and they're already *predicting* power outages. x(
How goes it at your 20? :D

We also have a pretty fierce wind, which is causing some isolated whiteouts. :)

2. Where did you hear 5 inches? |
|
I've heard about 3" snow with about another 1/4" of ice later today.
I can't wait to lose my power. :eyes:

8. Oh yes, the great Ice Storm of Dec 2002 |
|
What a freakin' bitch that was. The week before xmas. There was about an inch-1.5 of ice everywhere. The storm stayed around alot longer and the downpour was a lot stronger than ice storms normally are.
There were SO MANY power lines down all over the Triangle you couldn't move 10 feet in any direction for fear of stepping on them. Trees, trees, tree branches, and did I mention trees? came down everywhere. It took the counties until well into the summer to haul away all the debris.
The theory is the severe drought we had that summer weakened the trees so much, they snapped more easily in the ice. Viola, winter disaster at your service.
Anyway, Duke Power and Progress Energy both caught major flak about taking so long to restore power. Although Progress did a little better than Duke. Neither one was able to at least estimate how long it would take them to get to your neighborhood. I spent that week the week in Raleigh with my sister. At least that was fun.

13. We had no power for 5 days. |
|
It sucked so bad. I had just had major surgery about 2 weeks before so I was in pain and cold.
We stayed at the house all except 2 nights. I was worried about leaving the cats alone. Also never dreamed it would take so long to get power back.
We lost power for 11 days with hurricane Fran and I would much rather do that.
I am such a cold wimp.

That sounds like zero fun. x(
We've got both tubs filled along with several containers should the electricity (and thus, the well pump) go out. (It's tripping me out; I'm such a city girl such things would never occur to me to do. :D)Got plenty of gas for the generator, plenty of firewood ready... but I hope it doesn't come to that. You guys keep warm! :hi:

we have a gas water heater and a gas stove. If the power goes out maybe I'll just hole up in the bathroom with the hot water on.
And now Greg is calling for the possibility of more of this tomorrow. I watched the weather channel yesterday morning and they called for precipitation on Monday, but the local weather guys said nothing. I thought the local guys should know best...hmmmph.
Sorry to rant, I don't deal well with cold. :(
You've got a lot trees where you are so be careful. Are your power lines underground or above?

3. It's snowing pants out there now |
|
Well, its snow flakes, but pants is a cool word.
The good thing is its sticking. THe last time it snowed, it snowed all day long, and by night, there wasn't anything on the ground. That sucked more than a little bit.

and sounds like it's raining bb's here. The ice has started... Woke up with the water frozen somewhere, but got it going with a hair dryer on the one 1/8" of exposed pipe i found. Already a good 2-3" of snow, and last weather report says it's to continue over nite.
Were you around 12/02 for the big ugly ice storm? Really hoping here it's not a repeat this time. hang in there.

7. The Land of Goshen is Egypt |
|
Genesis 47:1-4 (KJV)
1 Then Joseph came and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brethren, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan; and, behold, they are in the land of Goshen.
2 And he took some of his brethren, even five men, and presented them unto Pharaoh.
3 And Pharaoh said unto his brethren, What is your occupation? And they said unto Pharaoh, Thy servants are shepherds, both we, and also our fathers.
4 They said moreover unto Pharaoh, For to sojourn in the land are we come; for thy servants have no pasture for their flocks; for the famine is sore in the land of Canaan: now therefore, we pray thee, let thy servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

18. No snow here, but accumulating sleet |
|
Just took a look at what NOAA had to say about the situation.
"...WINTER STORM WARNING EXTENDED UNTIL NOON MONDAY...
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GREENVILLE-SPARTANBURG HAS EXTENDED THE WINTER STORM WARNING FOR THE UPSTATE UNTIL NOON MONDAY.
AREAS OF SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN WILL BECOME PRIMARILY FREEZING RAIN AS WE HEAD INTO THE EVENING HOURS. DANGEROUS DRIVING CONDITIONS WILL REMAIN...ALONG WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF DAMAGE TO TREES AND POWER LINES.
THE SIDES OF THE ROAD ARE FILLING UP WITH PEOPLE WHO DID NOT HEED THE WARNING AND WERE DRIVING TOO FAST FOR THE EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS. PLEASE...DO NOT DRIVE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY."
Brrrrr :scared: Don't worry, no driving here. I observe a strict 3 flake rule, and sleet and freezing rain are much worse. Ick.

|
Later tonight, it's supposed to turn to sleet and ice. Lovely. I have a feeling that I will be taking a snow day as far as work is concerned. That's OK by me hey!
