Poll question: Are you a cat lover or a dog lover? |
|
I have 3 cats and a dog and I love them all for different reasons. I always get a chuckle about how fickle and persnickety the cats are, and each one is as different as children are in a family.
My dog I adore for different reasons. It seems to me that the bond is stronger with a dog. They will go out of their way to please their master where a cat insists on being waited on and ruling the roost.
I must be bi when it comes to dogs and cats.:P

1. This thread reminds me of a cartoon drawing I once saw: |
|
a dog is looking at his owner and the thought bubble above his head reads: "He loves me, he pets me, he feeds me....He must be God!"
a cat is looking at his owner and the thought bubble above his head reads: "He loves me, he pets me, he fees me....I must be God!"
Too true, too true...

|
"Dogs have owners, cats have staff".
That being said, I like dogs and cats both.

32. Here's my theory on men and cats which I developed after more |
|
than 30 years of being single: A man who has really strong negative feelings towards cats will usually have the same attitude towards independent women. At least, this has been true in my experience. I think it has something to do with that need to be master that some men feel.

33. I think that's right. |

In general, men who hate cats and love dogs often need to be propped up and affirmed by a subservient creature (whether it be an obsequious dog or a woman). Cats have their own minds, and these type of men usually can't stand that. Men who love cats tend to be more secure and have less of a need to display hyper-macho behavior (I know it's a huge generality).

I can't deal with the smell of dogs. It's odd because people will tell me they don't smell anything and to me the smell is overwhelming.

6. I agree dogs can be stinky, some breeds more than others.. |
|
...but it's up to the owner to maintain them. I had the best Golden Retriever ever (ex-husband got him in the divorce) who was always clean and fluffy, even though he swam in the Pacific every day. If you have a dog, you gotta understand the maintenance--for the dog's sake, he needs to go on lots of walks (they live to sniff the world, it's a sin to deprive them of new territory) and he needs to stay groomed and cleaned for your fellow humans' sakes.
Cats are definitely lower maintenance in that way, although my little Bombay constantly needs affection, a lap to lie across and about 15 minutes of play time every day. And she's 10 years old, not a kitten! Right now she's living with my 83 year old father, because my mom died in January and I loaned her to him so he wouldn't be so lonely. It's worked somewhat: Cat is even more spoiled than when I had her, and with a lot of the time he might spend being depressed, he uses to cater to her whims! So even tho I miss her, I figure she's doing good work.
Oh, and BTW, is there ANYONE on this board who makes their dogs or cats sleep in a pet bed or on the floor? I've never been able to keep my animals from sleeping on the bed with me, the cats love to cuddle, and dogs sleep in packs anyway, so it seems cruel to make them change that behaviour when they do so much for us! I could never be married to a man who wouldn't let the animals on the bed!

9. You are no doubt right about owners being largely responsible |
|
for keeping their dog groomed and fresh-smelling. The thing is, people don't seem to notice what I notice so it's not surprising they don't think they need to bathe their pet.
All three of my cats sleep on the floor at times, but not exclusively. I've never tried to keep them off the chairs and beds so I don't know what the trick might be. :hi:

no, wait, let me correct that--my cats allow me to sleep in my bed. Usually. Sometimes I get pushed to the edge - I have two 10-lbs cats--how does that happen???

Cats don't need your constant approval and attention.
I can tell mine "I need some space, guys," and they'll give it to me (as opposed to being lapgrafts and room supervisors) and won't take it personally.

21. While I love both, dogs will always be closer to my heart |
|
All my pets (2 cats and 1 dog) are family to me, but my dog in a way is almost like a brother. As a bit of an example, I was feeling really down, depressed and on the verge of tears one night. I was sitting at the top of my stairs with my head in my hands, I felt a wet nose on my arm and Rusty laid his head on my leg. I gave him a hug and I immediately felt better. Its little moments like that is what make dogs my favorite animal.

28. Both! And birds are pretty cool too. |
|
We humans have a relationship with dogs dating back 400,000 years acording to some. Dogs are a pack animal and seem to natural adopt a human family as its "pack."
Cats are equally intelligent but just differently socialized.
As a kid on the farm, I always had a dog along with some cats. As a single adult I have only owned cats as they don't seem to need quite the same emotional support as do canines.
When I retire, I will add a dog to the stable.
I remember as a kid walking home from school and finding my dog waiting for me. He'd been waiting there all day. We'd always see each other almost simultaneously and the happy reunion would commence. After all we hadn't seen each other for six hours! And then he's so fucking happy to see you he runs aroudn the house six times! How much unconditional love is that?
Of course, a happy cat sleeping on your lap or in your armpit is pretty cool too. Even if they are only there because of your body heat.
Oh yeah, birds are cool as well. And they understand more than you think. Some parrots have demonstrated quite a grasp for language, not mere mimicry in some cases. Don't underestimate the avian brain. It's more efficient per ounce (gram) than ours because it needs to fly.
I remember getting into a discussion with my sister over her parrot. "Oh he says hello and asks for food but he's not really thinking, he's jst learned to make the right noises at the appropriate time."
My response was, "Isn't that pretty much what we all do?"
When you boil all the bullshit away, all we are are monkeys with car keys.

I tend to relate to them more naturally and like their cattitude, quite apart from any more pragmatic reasons. Dogs can be great, but they tend to be subservient (and even dogs that do not normally act like airheads can be a little too high-maintenance and codependent) and I can't dig that at all.
There's a reason why "cool dog" never caught on the way "cool cat" did.

I have 3 cats. I'd like a dog but I am not home enough during the day. It would be unfair to bring a dog home and then abandon it every day for 10 to 12 hours.
Maybe when I retire.
