Anybody gonna watch the Perseid Meteor Shower?
It occurs to me that I don't post astronomy stuff nearly enough, despite my screenname. :silly:

Peak hours are going to be tomorrow night and Monday night. Tomorrow night from midnight til dawn there's a good chance to see upwards of 100 meteors/hour. :woohoo: :woohoo:

2. I'm going to!
I usually don't go to bed until 2 or 3 a.m., so I'm gonna step outside tonight, tomorrow and Monday to see what I can see. I live in the Smokies so it's nice and dark here, very little smog tho sometimes lots of fog or "smoke"...

5. tonight probably about 12/hour
I have pretty good seeing out here in the Wilds of Orange county. My biggest issue for seeing is usually the moon. Damn, sometimes I don't even need a flashlight.

3. I'm 1 block from Times Square, so unless it's coming down 8th Ave. in a police car,
not much chance I'll get to see it.

Thanks for the reminder. It would be a travesty if someone named skygazer didn't watch! :hi:

8. We are! We are!
We're going to be at friend's house way out in the country (low light pollution) so I hope we see some.

We usually try to catch the Perseids each year.

9. Oh! One other thing. You can see them even in 'off peak' hours
if the sky is clear.

12. Absolutely
I belong to the local astronomy club and it's always a big event for us.

And the moon doesn't interfere this year!

You will probably see more meteors after midnight because that is when your location on the earth rotates into a leading position as the earth plows through the debris.

However, soon after sunset keep an eye out for "earth grazers." Those are often the longest and most colorful meteors of all.

15. I mistakenly thought the peak was last night...
...and I was outside at 2:30 am, in a metal chair, with a crick in my neck, and I saw two measly meteors (one out of the corner of my eye) and I'm like "...That's it?"

I'll be watching tonight and tomorrow, though.

18. It it's not cloudy I'll be in the hot tub, lights out, looking north and northwest
We see the lights of a few houses to the southeast but they're mostly dots and it's night is lovely. dark, glitters with stars out here in the-back-of-beyond. I grew up seeing stars and had forgotten how wonderful they were during my years in Dallas, NOLA, D.C. and Atlanta, where the night sky seemed mostly pink. Retirement out here has its compensations, even if the medical care in the-back-of-beyond leaves something to be desired. A lot to be desired. But that's another thread.

19. Oooh, yes!
Thanks for the reminder! I had flagged my Space.com message the other day and then completely forgot. I hate it when I miss celestial events. :)

Of course, it's a crap shoot here in San Francisco with the fog and the light pollution, but I sometimes get lucky.

21. I saw a couple good ones last night before T storms headed in
it's supposed to clear up today and tomorrow so New Beau and I are going to take the kids out to the boonies and spend some time star gazing. Also, don't forget that there's a lunar eclipse at the end of the month. It's supposed to be a good one especially if you live west of the Rockies.
