Porpoises

Took the boy out flats fishing today in the sliver boat, down past Eldora there in the Mosquito Lagoon. Coming back up the old east channel we came upon a pod of porpoise, about 25 of of them in 3 groups, making for the inlet 15 miles beyond. The water is only 10 foot deep and gin clear this time of year, we rode up on them and they rode side-saddle in pairs and triples, both sides of the boat.

The skiff is only 14 foot long with a 3 foot beam. Close to the water, surrounded by these beautiful mammals, seems like your are dwarfed. They tilt to the side and fix you with that one-eyed grin they give , looking at you while they pump their tales and move out, under, and around the rig, spinning off to be replaced by another set. When they pass under the hull you can feel more than hear them clicking. They've more power than your 25hp. A mother and her young one stay off our starboard, swimming in perfect tandem.

Then they always seem to give one last look and that grin again as you part ways, as if to say, yeah we're both air breathers, but can you do this?
