I just cancelled my cable tv.
I haven't turned on my tv more than once in the last 6 months. Why the hell am I paying for digital cable?

I used to have a roommate who was always parked in front of the TV. But that was quite a while ago. My new roomate doesn't watch tv any more than I do.

So I finally called up and cancelled. No problems, no hassles, they came and took away the cable box the next day.

Yay! It feels nice to be a little bit more disconnected from the mass-media. :)

1. I've learned to live without TV for a number of years now
If there's a show I like I get it off of itunes. If I want to see the latest media outrage I can find it here or on a site like mediamatters. And I'm not a sports fan, so I'm not missing anything there. Yes, it does feel good doesn't it? We all complain about the media, but the truth is, the only thing that will change them is when they lose viewers. there's no greater way to stick it to them than to turn that fucking box off.

2. Agreed.
I once went 10 years without owning a television. But that was when I was a perpetual volunteer. I was never home. I was always out working somewhere on one cause or another.

I can't do the volunteer work anymore (health reasons) but I'm going to do without the television again.

4. Thank you.
Though, I don't think I'll even bother with the rabit ears.

I think I'll just hook the tv up to a dvd player and have fit for when people come over to visit. Of course, the only dvds I have in the house are superhero cartoons and movies, and some stuff for kids. :P

5. Welcome back to the 'real' world!!

I haven't had cable since 2003. It was always repeats anyway and I noticed
that quite frequently, the same movies were on my rabbit eared TV anyway
so, why pay? I watch PBS for my news. The network news is just fluff.
I enjoy the comedy's on regular TV too so, that clinched the deal.
Also, my son did much better in school without the lure of cable TV.

Enjoy all that money you'll be saving! ;)

6. Thank you.
The only real change is that I'm no longer paying for it. If I used to turn on the tv once a month that was probably a lot. I've just never been much of a tv person.

Which I think helps me be a bit more of an independent thinker.

Good for your son! :)

16. Well, if you do happen to turn it on again,
watch the show, 'The Office'. It's subtle humor and it's hilarious! :)
The characters are a great study in human behavior, imho. :)
"The Office' had 9 Emmy Nominations! http://www.nbc.com/The_Office/

I am on the internet a lot and I watch video's here, even
from the cable shows, like 'Countdown with Keith Olbermann.'
I'm not missing a thing! ;)

I only watch slightly more TV than you, too. But you should watch more movies, damnit!

I usually stick to classic movies myself, though -- seen any of those?

11. Not even Countdown or The Daily Show?
If I had cable I probably would find too many things to watch. I am trying to cut back on the free TV I watch. Fairly successfully. It helps that everything is re-runs now too.

12. I'll see clips of those online
but I've only once ever turned on the tv to watch KO, and I've only turned on the tv to watch JS a half dozen times total.

13. I miss Animal Planet, Mythbusters, the Travel Channel, No Reservations and
the Daily Show. But other than that, it makes no difference to me. Besides, nothing was worth having to deal with fucking Comcast a moment longer.

I would agree, it does feel nice to be a bit more disconnected.

17. Can you see any of that stuff online?
If I could still cook for myself I'd probably miss the Food Network. But even a lot of that is available online. I just can't bring myself to watch it anymore.

18. I'm sure I can. I know you can download the Daily Show. But until I really, really
miss it I figure I'm probably better off otherwise occupying myself. Maybe voluteering to help animals instead of watching Animal Planet. Or traveling instead of watching the Travel Channel.

19. I've been waffling about this for months.
I have TiVo and LOVE recording things to see later or to watch again -- John Pilger on Amy's show, panels on BookTV, even the Godfather movies.

But, the expense nags at me as does lining Murdoch's pockets.

I never watch the corporate media any more and would be happy with clips of Keith and Jon and Stephen.

Hard call. But, it would be liberating!

22. That is another good point.
So many people have so many extras to go with their tv service that it costs a small fortune. If I had Tivo I might have watched more tv. But would it really have been worth it?

24. Hard to say. I only learned about Pilger because I watch Amy's show.
I could stream the audio but find that sort of annoying and would probably not do it. I've canceled HBO and every other frill except the TiVo. I don't watch cable news or talking heads or anything like that.

If I could stream LinkTV and BookTV, I'd be outta here in a heartbeat. It's too bad that I can't send my $ directly to those entities and not via Murdoch -- although CSPAN is a wholly owned arm of the cable corporati.

26. I haven't had cable ever since I moved into this apartment two years ago...
until a few months ago when I discovered that my apartment complex accidentally turned on the basic cable in my apartment. :) We discovered this right as we were putting in a nice big widescreen TV that my roommate got as a hand-me-down.
Not that either of us watch much TV, but we do watch movies and we have a PS2. (although I rarely play, and ever since my roommate got his new job he hasn't had much time to.)

27. Way to go!
:toast:

I've been thinking about it, too. The only thing that is stopping me are the shows and great documentaries on cbc and cbc newsworld. The rest of the stations I don't watch at all. Most tv is shleck, as far as I'm concerned.
