Desiderata....
Something to read and think about...

*******************************************************
Desiderata
(something desired as essential)

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember
what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle to yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars and you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
--Max Ehrmann, 1927.

I thought all my fellow DUers would appreciate this.

1. Deteriorata
Edited on Sun Jan-25-04 10:37 PM by Jack Rabbit
From the National Lampoon.

Go placidly amid the noise and waste, and remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof. Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep. Rotate your tires. Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself, and heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys. Know what to kiss, and when. Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do. Wherever possible, put people on hold. Be comforted, that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment, and despite the changing fortunes of time, there is always a big future in computer maintenance.

ON EDIT

When I was living in college dorms, two young ladies lived side by side. On hang a scrolled copy of Desiderata on her door with a plumed feather; the other hung a scrolled copy of Deteriorata on her door with a plucked rubber chicken.

13. I loved the background vocals - Joni Mitchell did it
"You are a fluke of the universe. You have no right to be here..."

Let not the sands of time get into your lunch.

For a good time, call 606-4311. Ask for Ken.

Take comfort in the fact that your dog is finally getting enough cheese.

A couple more Deteriorata lines.

Radio Dinner kicked ass!

12. Nope, I do
I was a junior in high school. We used it in our variety show and it helped me make it through a particularly difficult period in my life. Seems trite, now, but it was powerful when I was 17.

6. When I was in high school, a lot of the girls had a Desiderata poster
in their bedrooms. At the time, I found it sickening. When I heard "Deteriorata" on the radio, I absolutely loved it! :-)

11. I haven't read this in years...thanks for reminding me.

Despite the face that our pop culture once upon a time overexposed and cheapened this beautiful piece, in its unbastardized state it is just as true now as it was when written.

Kharma will take care of Bush and the Bushies...I believe the universe is unfolding as it should.
