It's always nice to see that the Catholic clergy is often more enlightened than the Church hierarchy is.

1. Very nice!
A cousin of my elder (paganism/wicca) is a Catholic priest; they respect each other's beliefs and get along great.

36. See???
That's why I love going to Druid rituals -- it's like the best part of Mass on the best Holy Days without the boring parts.

And I can tell ya, we sure laugh a WHOLE lot more than our Catholic brethren! That's what I love.

6. Haruka is scared of nuns, too
Not because of CCD, but because of going to Catholic school.

39. All of the Benedictine nuns I know are pretty cool!
Edited on Wed Aug-15-07 07:25 PM by mentalsolstice
Mother Angelica's sect (EWTN), not so much. And I should know, I live a hop and a skip from EWTN's broadcasting headquarters. I run into her nuns all the time at the grocery. They wear wool habits even in summer...with 100+ degree temps, I don't want to get too close to them.

I also had the honor of meeting and talking to Sr. Helen Prejean, "Dead Man Walking", and she was way cool! She taught at my husband's Jr. high and H.S. alma mater in New Orleans before embarking on her current mission...although she was a bit young to have taught him...at least now I know the about SSJ sisters (her order), and the source of his compassion.

As you and Haruka know, having grown up in the church, Catholics are weird. They're either wildly conservative, or they're wildly liberal...even in the church hierarchy.

My heroes in life are Oscar Romero and Dorothy Day...I defy any progressive liberal to find fault with either of them...

Just sayin.

Growing up, I remember going to a wedding party and seeing 4 priests smoking, drinking, and playing poker at a table together. Quite a sight.

24. No ruby slippers
He has kidnapped a man before, though, which oddly enough is nothing more than an amusing story in Haruka's family, much like the parts of my family in "waste management" are just an amusing addition.

Seriously though, almost all the guests are Irish or Italian Catholics.

Even Haruka's step-grandfather, who's head of the K of C is fine with it.

38. Priests are people. The Vatican is not.
Kind of reminds me of how protesters showed up at this English CEO's office who engaged in sweatshop labor. Being the English Gentleman he was, he offered them all tea and cookies, and the talked about things over tea. He was a person. The corporation he worked at was not.
