Why do I always see an asterisk next to Bush's name?
Is it meant to remind us that he's an asshole. I don't get it.

1. It signified that Bush 43* is special
in that he was not elected President in 2000.

It started because of Doonsebury.
The cartoonist, can't remember the name now, put an asterisk by *'s name. Ever since then, it has caught on to show that he is not really the president.

2. It's meant to remind us
that he was never elected President. He was appointed by the Supreme Court.

3. I believe it's
to indicate a footnote, as in:

In 2004, President Bush* took office for his second term.

*We use the term "President" lightly, as his sorry ass wasn't elected either time.

:hi:

7. My best friend and I were talking about President Gore yesterday.
I said I wished that he'd run.

She said, "Yes! He was already elected once, and he can do it again!"

22. Same here
I refuse to type his name - it offends me.

There was a poster 'diane in sf' earlier this year who "thought * was literally "Whistle Ass" a term used to describe GWB by a little old lady who died during his first term and left all her estate to getting rid of him. I picture a puckered, whistling orifice as synonymous with GWB."

I liked that imagery so much I saved her post in my profile commentary.

9. Let's not discount the 'asshole' designation. Vonnegut so artistically
rendered that body part to very much resemble an asterisk in Breakfast with Champions. I feel that it is worthy of mention, if for no other reason than to honor Kurt.

19. I thought Gary Trudeau used it...
...to show that Shrub is one of Daddy Bush's "thousand points of light." Every scene he appeared in, it was a a little glowing asterisk.
