Poll question: Should I Be Really Evil to a Very Nice Man?
Thomcat is taking me out for a birthday dinner

he asked me to pick the place

Should i be nice and go to a vegan/vegetarian restaurant or should I be evil and make him take me to a steakhouse?

i ask those of you without a sense of humor to not piss on my thread. thanks.

1. Your b-day your pick is what I say
it's not being evil in fact if he really wants to treat you he'd be more upset that you didn't choose what you like best. ;)

7. Yum! Steamed brocolli and a boring salad!
:9

I can get french fries in one of the steak houses. They're actually really good, thick cut, cooked in peanut oil and well seasoned.

8. Hmmmm....
I can suggest,

A really good Malasian place in china town. It's a hole in the wall that has been there for 30 years. They have a few dishes there that I love, and they apparently have awesome seafood.

A high-end Japanese restaurant in Midtown that I've been to twice. They've changed chefs so it's worth checking out. It was fantastic when I was there before.

We could walk down 2nd ave in the village and see what new and cool places have opened. There's always good food down there.

We could pick something nice at random out of Zagaat and just go check it out.

I agree. We need to pick a weekend and go for dim sum brunch. Lisa would love it.

I'd love to invite pagerbear. We just need to get him to log in more often and check his PMs. :)

3. I don't think it's evil if that's where you want to go.
Also, IIRC, Thom isn't "squeamish" at places like that. So long as there's something there that he can have and enjoy, I say it's your pick.

If he's paying, have the filet.

4. On the plus side,
I've been dragged to so many steak houses for business lunches and dinners that I know all the best places where I can't get anything to eat. :P

14. From what I know of ThomCat, I like the guy too. ... but ...
it's your birthday. Go with the steak. I mean, sweet Jesus, you ought to see me on my birthday. It's the one 24-hour period in which I allow myself to be a completely spoiled asshole -- your birthday is the national holiday dedicated to you! Go with steak! Go with steak!

(Also, I like making people do evil things. )

16. Hey, you can eat at a vegetarian restaurant, but he won't find much at a steakhouse.
I'd do the kind thing, think you'll feel better for it, and it'll mean a lot to him and show that you're a thoughtful friend. And you may be pleasantly surprised. I have eaten in some excellent vegetarian restaurants. The creativity in some of them is amazing and I'd choose one over a boring steakhouse any day...:9

We joke about this, but she's good about it. I'm really open to any place where there's at least one good dish I can eat. :)

Hey, it's your birthday, besides I'm sure he wants you to enjoy your dinner. He wouldn't pick the steakhouse for dinner on his birthday either.

Enjoy and Happy Birthday. :hi:

27. Is there some place both of you could enjoy?
Can a restaurant serve meat and still be vegan? Of is that an oxymoron? Does the cooking tools become soiled to a vegans way of seeing things,is what I am clumsily trying to say.

28. As long as they have dishes that are vegan
and nothing is fried in the same oil as non-vegan stuff (I don't tend to buy fried food anyway) it's fine. I have rarely ever had a problem in any restaurant in NYC except the steak houses, which is why Priyanka is joking about it. :)

31. Check out what I just saw on my NYT RSS feed
A Measure of Guidance: Steakhouses Beyond the Beef
http://dinersjournal.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/17/a-mea...

(snip)
Recently a colleague stopped me as I walked by his desk and asked if I could recommend a steakhouse. This is a tough call, because I find it impossible to isolate one steakhouse that covers all needs, moods and appetites — steakhouses are tricky that way, as I noted in a blog post earlier this year. That post assesses some of the virtues and limitations of several of the city’s most prominent steakhouses.

Fortunately, my colleague had some parameters that helped me shrink the field of possibilities. While he sought a steakhouse for a special occasion for his teenaged son, who loves steaks, he too would be going — and footing the bill — and he isn’t a beef eater. So he needed a place that might please his son without leaving him in the lurch.
