Reading these articles about college admission, all I can say is, "thank God that's over"
As a recent graduate I've been reading the weekly trove of articles about college admission with a new eye. It makes me remember the heady days of filling out 12 different applications, working furiously to try and figure out which aspects of my record and personality to emphasize, worry about extracurriculars, etc. As hard as it was to do all that back in 2002/2003, I feel sorry for the people who are working through that now. It seems to have gotten even harder. It's hard for me to believe, but colleges seem to be even more demanding about applications than before.

All I can say to you families who are trying to get a kid into college today is, good luck

1. I hear ya.
It's insane what people have to do now to get into a lot of colleges. I don't object to colleges having some criteria for potential students, but it seems that now, not only do you have to have good grades, but you have to have hours and hours and community service, you have to convince them that you are a high quality person, etc. etc.

My daughter is going through that right now. She's in community college, but she's preparing to apply to a 4 year university, and she has to jump through more hoops than an animal in a circus act to even be considered.

:eyes:

2. Yeah, I remember that
I did community service stuff, sports (tennis), extracurriculars (French club, trivia) and had to work pretty hard to boost my SAT score. The grades weren't so hard for me to come by, just because I demand that of myself. But with all the other things one needs to get in, it's not easy to fit it all into a seven day week, eh?

The irony is that in the end, despite getting into some good places that require all that stuff, I ended up going to a school that didn't accept standardized tests and didn't ask one question about extracurriculars. All they wanted were grades.

Where's your daughter applying?
