"Weeds"
The last time I saw my mother alive, I remember driving the familiar miles to the hospital, sensing that this might be the last time, and suddenly seeing everything as if I'd never see it again: houses, yards, fences, trees, weeds that grew up along the edge of one driveway where I waited for a light, it had been weeks this time, and now she'd stopped eating. There were dandelions on the hospital grounds and crabgrass and pigweed. I remembered the necklace she showed me how to make once from dandelion flowers. The clouds made shadows on the walkway. The elevator smelled like medicine and powder. In the bed my mother slept. Her breath was uneven, and I wondered if she dreamed. The room was filled with greenhouse flowers. I wore that necklace for hours, until it grew too limp to keep.

4. This poem really resonates with me because of some issues I'm dealing with right now. |

Paula wants to marry me; I gave her the cold shoulder. She's just a little old, you see - If only she were older!
