irritating bumper stickers
List some of the messages on bumper-stickers that you have seen that really ticked you off or made you want to rear-end the person for having it.

Some I've seen:
1. Abortion: Hitler would have loved it!
2. She's a baby, not a choice.
3. (Picture of burning bush) This isn't the only time God has spoken through a bush.
4. We vote pro-life
5. Bush said it, I believe it

17. And can you imagine the
shitstorm uproar that would ensue if that were the other way around? Why the hell are these fuckers allowed to go around saying things like this (you should just see the yahoo and aol message boards, and then there's Savage and Annthrax), with no problem, and someone says the least little thing against the Boy King Impostor and they get reported and Homeland "Security" is all over their ass?

It always cracks me up when
I see a bumper sticker that says "These colors don't run," but the manufacture of said sticker was crappy and the colors, indeed, run. (Or, the flag that's been on that car's antenna since 9/12/2001 has faded and bled.)

64. That first one you mentioned
the Truth not Tolerance one incensed me so much when I saw it a couple years ago that I wrote a letter to the local paper ranting about what a thoroughly unChristian statement that was. Doesn't sound like something Jesus would have said to me! Gah. I suggested they stop thumping on their damn Bible and try opening it sometime, even turning past Leviticus (and no fair going straight to Revelation, the second-favorite book for the extremists). What they find in the Gospels might freaking surprise them! ("turn the other cheek" "judge not lest ye be judged" "go into your closet and speak in private with your Father" ... you know, all that hippie stuff!)

Oops. I guess that one still sends me off on a rant.

71. Thank Jeebus for Protestantism, eh?
That was one of the key tenets of Martin Luther: your deeds on earth, no matter how despicable, would be forgiven if you asked for it. Which, in turn, means you get a free pass into heaven.

So, IOW, Hitler could have done all sorts of eeeevil, nasty stuff, but if he asked for forgiveness, he gets a free pass into heaven. Makes perfect sense, huh?

I wonder how many other atheists Protestantism has created over the years?

16. "Work harder. Millions on
Welfare are Depending on You!", driven by a redneck in a rusted-out station wagon. It should have read, "Work Harder, MillionAIRES on corporate welfare are depending on you!"

Another favorite was "Gun Control means prying my gun out of my cold, dead hands!" Don't tempt anyone, pal.

And two really sickening ones had a picture of that damned fucking confederate flag. One said, "If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand." Oh, yeah, I understand, all right, and you DON'T have to explain it! The other one said, "Heritage, NOT Hate!" Don't you mean "Heritage OF Hate?"

Then there was this gem I just saw the other day: Liberals: No Brains, No Guts, NO GLORY! So, I guess if a soldier killed in Iraq happened to be one of them there "libruls", he didn't really have any brains or guts, and doesn't deserve any glory, huh?

40. And IMHO,
sorry, but I DO understand, and it IS a heritage of hate! Try asking an African-American how they feel about it, how it makes them feel to see that symbol of hate and oppression waved in front of them? That's like waving a swastika in front of a Jew, but saying, well, it's just my heritage, you know.

The war ended about 140 years ago, and it's time for them to recognize that.

45. Again, you are wrong.
The opinion of someone viewing the symbol has no bearing on what that symbol means to the person displaying it.

Are you equally offended by "It's a Black Thing You Wouldn't Understand"? If not then you are a hypoctite.

I could be offended by people displaying crosses. Being a pagan type person I might see a lot of good people being burned at the stake and worse simply for being of the wrong religion. Should we force all the crosses to be taken down? How about those of my people who are AmerInd? The American fleag is horribly offensive to many of them. Should we not fly it at all?

Using your logic, or lack of, the American Revolution was won over 200 years ago. Quit celebrating it. Quit being proud of it. For god sake don't teach your children about it.

C'mon. You are right. It was over a long time ago. Quit being offended about/by it.

47. And just what the hell does
the Confederacy have to be proud of? Enslaving, abusing, and oppressing an entire race of people and actually being proud of it and fighting to maintain such a system? Continuing to horribly put down and oppress that same race until they're finally forced to start treating them like human beings over ONE HUNDRED YEARS LATER? I'm sorry, but, to me, at least, that just ain't something to be proud of at all, certainly not a heritage worth celebrating and preserving.

And the rednecks around here (in Ohio) who prominently display the stars and bars (some have it flying from their antennae) proudly admit that they do it as an intimidation tactic toward blacks and other minorities, especially the Mexican immigrants who've moved into our community to work in the local nurseries and farms. Again, what's the difference between flying that flag and flying a flag with the swastika on it? I mean, after all, the swastika's just a symbol of a "heritage", you know!

50. Actually the "swastika", before it was adopted by the Nazi party
was a symbol meaning peace, or happiness, or something.

Remember too that there are people who will tell you that being an American is nothing to be proud of. Or beng from Ohio, or any of a hundred thing...including being gay, or black, or what have you.

Characterizing the entirity of southern contributions to the U.S. as slavery you are doing a great disservice to history. Prehaps instead of being a liberal historian, and missing thing becasue of the artificial fliters you place on it, being a true historian and accepting all of history, complete with the ugly parts and the new informatiuon, would serve better.

Don't forget that the Civil War had little to nothing to do with slavery in the begining. It wasn't until well into the war that it finally became a major issue. Most of those fighting on the side of the Confederacy wern't slave owners. Had never owned slaves.

You also seem to be forgetting that blacks wern't treated any better in the North either before or after the war. Forget not that even Ohio has KKK groups.

74. People from all states fought on both sides in that war
It didn't matter if you were a northerner or southerner: you had Ohioans fighting for the confederacy, just as you had Mississippians fighting for the union. It was "brother against brother", as family members fought against each other on opposite sides.

It truly was a Civil War, and not some "War Between the States" as some historians claim. And it wasn't just about slavery, either, as much as some folk claim, too.

It was about many things: the power of the federal government over the affairs of states, the slavery issue in the south AND north, the concerns of the agrarian south against those of the industrialized north, etc.

Although the emancipation was very important, probably the most important thing the Civil War settled was the structure of our nation: the states were no longer considered independent from one another in a loose "confederacy", but were all equal partners in a federal system, and were subservient to the interests of the nation as a whole.

:)

Along with what "Jesus'last words were" I think is one of his best pieces. The fact that he was fairly religious in his own way, and was once a preacher makes it even more interesting.

Sam's last words? Oh...reportedly they were "but I'm not ready to go yet. What? Oh, ok." He wasn't talking to his friend who was holding him at the time.

holding him at the time said that he sounded like he was talking to someone or something no one else could see or hear. The friends said that he was argumentative at first in saying he wasn't ready to go, then he seemed to suddenly settle down and get calm, then when he said ok, he said it peacefully like he understood and accepted whatever was being said.

58. DarkPhenyx,
care to comment on that slogan?

hat's what I meant about their not recognizing that the war was over ONE HUNDRED FORTY YEARS AGO! Sometimes I wish we could just go back in history and let them have their secession.

I've been down there, and all they seem to talk about is the Civil War, how we done them wrong, how the confederacy "will rise again" (good, this time I say let's let them alone and let 'em have their own country, because that's what it's like down there, another country). Many even say how slaves were actually "contented", that they didn't want to be free because then they'd have to take care of themselves, etc., etc., ad nauseum.:puke:

61. Well, I live down here...
...and it isn't all they talk about. Sometimes it seems like all the North talks about though. That and about how stupid Southerners are. How we don't need them. Any of this sounding familier?

"Many even say how slaves were actually "contented", that they didn't want to be free because then they'd have to take care of themselves, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

Define many. one in a hundred? one in 10,000? There are idiots everywhere. how old are these people you talked to? Racist opinions are everywhere and not just southerners feel that way. You have a very obvious bias against the south. How unfortunate. I can tell you that NYC is a completely different country from Ohio, as is California. Not better or worse, just different.

For a contextual perspective, there are many Japanese who don't feel that WW2 is over yet. This is particularly apparent if you understand the Eastern philosophy on war, which is far different than the Western view. War isn't waged just on the battlefield, but also in commerce, and in philosophy. In many ways they are still "at war" with us. They just aren't shooting at us.

67. That's certainly true about
war not being waged just on the battlefield alone, and I'm not sure there will ever be real closure between the North and South.

I suppose it would be different if I actually lived in the South (couldn't handle the heat and humidity, though, a couple of months of it here in Cleveland is all I can take, and I can't even take that!) my perspective would be different. But I don't.

And I remember that when I worked for a company once where I had to call all over the country all day, it seemed that every other time I'd call one of the deep south states, it would be a holiday such as Jefferson Davis's birthday, or Lee's birthday, or Longstreet's birthday, or Beauregard's birthday, etc., etc. and everything was closed. And northerners didn't write the book that came out a few years ago called "The South Was Right", or similar books, either.

Some years ago, he and his brother Ed were visitng friends in Georgia. While driving back to their motel from a show at some club out in the sticks, Wes and Ed got pulled over for speeding.

The cop approached the car and told Ed, who was driving, "Boy, don't nobody go through Geo'gia that fast!"

To which Ed replied, "Grant did."

125. Depends on how you look at it.
I own more guns than all the Jews had when they started the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising (with less than 20 weapons total). It took the Germans longer to crush that uprising, which took place in an enclosed, walled in section of a city that was surrounded with a wall, barbed wire, and armed guards and was started with a handful of obsolete weapons, than it took them to conquer Poland, and they only suceeded in crushing the resistance by levelling the entire ghetto.

BTW, in case you didn't know, both Hitler AND Stalin were strong supporters of gun control. They knew that armed opposition was much more dangerous to them than unarmed opposition.

Or on the trigger of your gun?" --The Clash, Guns of Brixton
