Just learned my FICO score
798. How does this compare? I heard even people with scores in the 800s can't get a home loan. How can I get to 800?

Mine is only 680 and I scored top credit when I purchased the Mazda a few weeks ago. Maybe you can get one for free...

4. Awesome!
What's that mean "top credit"?

I'm just glad it was a lot better than my SAT score. :hi:

27. What I was told
since I was buying a Mazda and wanted the low interest rate, is that they have a tier level on credit. It uses your Fico score which in turns uses if you pay your bills on time and other factors.

I think your FICO is great but if you want to get a house or even a car, you have to show steady income for at least 6 months.

Good luck and what red state are you considering?

...to buy a new car up to 39K from USAA. I'm also entertaining the though of purchasing a home here shortly. If they're interesting, I'll post the results of that.

38. My apologies for not being clear...
...By saying, "If they're interesting...", I was saying, "If the results are interesting." I applied some time ago and got approved, but I"m finding out that things have changed a bit, so I'm interested to see if I would get approved right now again or not.

14. Really?? Through who, if you don't mind me asking?
Because, I believe mine is somewhere in the low 600s right now, and I desperately want to buy a new house. (We're living in a mobile home that I bought from my brother-in-law for $2500 a few years ago right now.. it's getting too small for us very quickly.. )

19. Interesting..thanks for the info..
Honestly, I've just been too scared, for lack of a better word, to go in and apply.. I know there's been some bad stuff on my credit.. mostly student loans which I have since consolidated, and have been current on for the last 2 year or so... I just haven't been up to facing the whole "I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do for you" speech again..

And, if things go as projected, you're going to need a great score to get a loan very soon. You should be fine!

16. That is a great score
I would think your income level would be a bigger issue than score. If you earn enough, you should get a loan. When my husband and I bought in 2001, our loan guy said he hardly ever saw scores as high as ours...and we were 750-something and about 802. You should be fine, as long as you don't try for too big a loan.

What are you looking at buying?

30. all it does is influence your rate
Edited on Sun Aug-19-07 01:43 AM by frogcycle
and if you get the report, you can find what little there is preventing an 850 (perfect)

it is probably lame things like "number of credit cards" and "recent large transactions"

we got ours a few years ago and found we were being hurt by a credit card we had not used in years, because it had a high limit and tripped some alarm that we might be card-shufflers. We went through and got several dormant cards cancelled, and got one department store to remove a comment they had put erroneously, intended for someone else. We moved it from something like 780 to 830.

There are plenty of info sources out there to spell out how to fix it. here's one: www.myfico.com But everyone is correct - that's plenty high.

40. Last year when I checked mine, my score was floating around 805...
and when I went shopping for a house the bank approved me for a $2m home loan. Only needed $500,000 over 10y, but it was nice to know that I had the bank's confidence. You're score is extremely good and far above the national average.
