The obscure town challenge! |
|
Name a town... or two... or five... in the US or Canada that you bet no other DU'er has been to.
My picks:
Kelso, California.
Lookout, California.
Ono, California.
Pioche, Nevada.
Lesser Slave Lake, Alberta.
:D

It's in the panhandle.
On edit: Indian Creek, Illinois. It is the smallest incorporated town in the metropolitan Chicago area, population of about 188. Used to be 193, but my nephew, his wife and her three kids moved to Mundelein.

I moved to Decatur with my family in 1976, when I was 13. We moved here from Miami Fla... talk about culture shock! I moved back to Miami in 1981, 2 weeks after graduation, and just came back in 2002. I can't think of any reason to leave here again... I'll be here til I die.

Rennert is in Robeson County - basically a country community like Rex and Prospect. Duart is on NC 87 between Tarheel and Fayetteville...it is a tiny green sign that says Duart. :hi: The only things there are the #2 Lock and Dam on the Cape Fear River and the DuPont Plant site.

I grew up in Lumberton then lived in Fayetteville a few years, but now I get the little towns all mixed up, trying to remember. I remember "Orrum" in my Grandma's voice.. whenever she'd tell stories about when she was young, I can hear it so clear. I know I went when I was little, don't remember it though :(
We're probably related!

I am not sure where I have been in New York or Wisconsin though, since we travelled both a fair amount when I was much younger and dad was driving. Candor is so small that it's not on my road atlas.

My family is from Champaign County. My dad grew up at Dewey (talk about an obscure town!). I was at Tuscola for a while. Then Rantoul.
I think there was a guy from Oblong on my floor in college (ISU). There were like three or four guys from that area. I know one was from Casey, and one from Greenup, and I think one was from Oblong.
Where are you from?

61. Well I've driven through there countless times on 65 |
|
and there were other instances like a couple 4th of July fireworks. For a little town they have a pretty cool display, or at least they did when I went. Although nothing in the area beats Clear Lake for fireworks in Rockwell it was as if they were shooting them off right overhead; a really nice effect. Other times it was looking for stuff like garage sales, cars, stuff like that.

that Rockwell is a little bit off of 65, which was why I picked it - not even on a major road. Is that the road that has signs in the ditch identifying various plants?

The reason Eagle Grove doesn't have fireworks is that no one would be there to see 'em. EVERYBODY goes to Clear Lake. And with good reason!! Clear Lake's fireworks rock!!

These towns, except for Maple and Cloverland, are too small for my road atlas. I have been all over Honey Creek township in Sauk County, but I am not sure I have been to the Duluth area, or any further north in Wisconsin than Rhinelander.

in Douglas County way up north. Blueberry had population of like 4 when I lived up there (around 1980). The only thing I remember being in Cloverland was an elementery school. Maple was bigger with the high school.
Humbird in near Eau Claire.
And Honey Creek is the one I know best. It's down south outside of Burlington right on the border of Racine and Walworth Counties. Seems like everyone in the area drove through it on their way to see concerts at Alpine Valley.

|
I know I biked through Valton one Sunday afternoon. I also know that I biked from Baraboo to Elroy (and back) to take the Elroy-Sparta trail, but I do not remember what roads I took. It seems likely that I did go through Wonewoc, but maybe not. I no longer have a bicycle-Wisconsin map to show if it is on a likely route. I think I may have even hi-lighted thr trips I made on one such map, but am not even sure if I still have it.

That's on the Elroy-Sparta trail. I specifically left off the bike trail towns, cuz I figured people would have passed through them.
There are a bunch of obscure little hamlets in that area: La Valle, Hustler and New Lisbon come to mind.
BTW, if you're ever in Wilton again, make sure to stop at Gina's Pies. Yummm.

but I bicycled from Baraboo to Elroy and Wonewoc is kinda on that route, being on Hwy 33, or just off of it. It's unlikely though, that I used Hwy 33. New Lisbon is not obscure to me though since a number of my relatives moved up there in the early 1900s.

Stopped at Starke for lunch a few times on drives over to Gainesville or Ichetucknee.
Watch your speed on US 301 there! I had to drive a client from Gainesville to the Jacksonville airport to catch a flight. His flight was at 7:20. I left Gainesville a little after 6:00. I don't know how I survived the Starke and Waldo speedtraps, but somehow I did.

Dutton is actually not far from my home town of Kentwood.
Remus is about 20 miles west of Mount Pleasant, home of my beloved Central Michigan University.
A few years ago I visited one of my late grandmother's friends in Davis, WV; we also stopped by the home of her mother, in Coketon.
A couple years before that we stayed at a hotel in Kayenta on the way back from my brother's college orientation.
A couple of my high school band camps took place in North Manchester.

225. My hometown--Prince Frederick, Maryland |
|
Actually, my real hometown is Port Republic, Maryland, five miles south, but because Port Republic only consists of a post office, a liquor store and a gas station, there really is no "town" to be spoken of, so I count Prince Frederick as my hometown. It's got a few shopping centers, a K-Mart, a Wal-Mart, the county courthouse and office buildings, a couple of chain restaraunts and two hotels, but other than that, nothing signifigant unless you live there or are driving through.

Saratoga is actually well known if you own an airline, or pilot a plane for airline owners. There's and annual meeting of the "Conquistadors del Cielo" Club in Saratoga, and all the airline CEOs come in for it. They stay at a palatial ranch, and their pilots stay at the old West style Hotel Wolf.

Mentone, Texas is the only town and county seat of Loving County, Texas. Loving County is the smallest county population-wise in the entire United States. Only 67 people live in Loving County.
As for the greater Mentone metropolitian area, a grand total of 15 people live in this bustling city of lights that never sleeps.
