Let's dish about the Oscars - what's your thoughts on the award show?

I was pretty pleased that "Angels in America" swept all the acting categories and best TV Movie. I even picked Jeffrey Wright for best Supporting Actor and he had won (he was one of 3 nominated from Angels)

I'm pleased about who won the awards for the movies except Best Supporting Actress, but that's because I had just seen "The Cooler" this past weekend and that movie just blew me away - especially Maria Bello.

I don't know who I'll cheer on for the Oscars. You just know that both Sean Penn and Bill Murray will get nominated and I really want both of them to win

1. Sean Penn is really due.

He deserved an Oscar for "Dead Man Walking", "I Am Sam".

It's his time.

I also think Sir Ian McKellan should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for "LOTR". And win.

And I've seen neither "Mystic River" nor "LOTR." I just admire both actors and wish to see their work honored.

2. I wish the Oscars

would separate the dramas from the comedies in the major awards, the way the Golden Globes do. Comedies really can get the short end of the stick most years (the Shakespeare in Love debacle notwithstanding), and certainly comedic performances often get overlooked in favor of dramatic performances. The two are so different; there's a big difference between a Mystic River and a Lost in Translation. They are both great movies, but how can you say which is the BETTER movie? They both deserve recognition.

I still can't figure out why Justin Kirk wasn't nominated for Angels in America. I thought his performance was wonderful. I was very happy Jeffrey Wright won, though. His character could so easily have gone over the top into camp, and he anchored the movie with great dignity. VERY tricky performance.

3. I'm happy that HBO did Angels

And I have a wide screen HDTV on which I saw it, BUT it would have made a MAGNIFICENT duo of theatrical-release movies.

I agreed with just about all of the Golden Globes. I thought Lost in Translation was a great example of a real HUMAN film and I thought LOTR is the pinnacle of merging technology with HUGE mythic themes.

The acting awards to the Mystic River Guys were well deserved, and Eastwood's acceptance on behalf of Sean Penn was right on the money.

I was a little disappointed that no recognition was given to "Dead Like Me" but it doesn't seem to get much attention.

Before the Bush* Crime Family staged its coup, it was fun watching for the statements made in support of progressive and humanitarian causes.

The 2001 Oscars, eerily devoid of any social or political protests and capped by Julia Roberts' incredibly revolting narcissistic acceptance speech, set the pattern for those which have followed.

I plan to not watch. :boring:

7. I used to be a huge Oscar nut & trivia buff.

Taped the shows every year for about ten years. Had Oscar parties with the very best trivia quizzes. One year had my party in the coffee house where I moonlighted (moonlit?), on Broadway in Long Beach, part of the gay ghetto, and gave away prizes donated by local merchants. That was very fun.

My obsession started when Jodie Foster won for "The Accused." Until I was about 12 years old, people used to tell me all the time how much I looked like her. (She's three months older than I am.) I hated it. Hated it more after Hinckley shot Brady et al. But when Jodie won her first Oscar, both my sisters called me yelling "You won! You won!" I don't know why, but that made me start watching the show every year. And yes, Jodie Foster is one of my favorite actresses.

I've been on pins & needles four times for Ed Harris; he is EXCELLENT and way overdue. But it was cool to see Chris Cooper win last year. I was thrilled when Hillary Swank won for "Boys Don't Cry," but a little sad that Annette Bening didn't get it; her winning would've made "American Beauty" only the fourth film to win all five "big" awards. Besides, I thought Annette Bening should've won for "The Grifters" -- but then, that was also the year I thought Mary McDonnell should've won for "Dances with Wolves," and it was the year Whoopi Goldberg won it for "Ghost." That was a consolation prize for "The Color Purple," which was completely snubbed by the Academy -- but no one could've beaten Geraldine Page that year, anyway.

So... uh... I guess I used to follow them pretty closely... not anymore. I don't know who the up & coming talent is. It doesn't mean anything much to me anymore.

In the last few years, while I still enjoy it when someone I adore is nominated, I'm just not that interested, either in watching the show or bitching about who is or isn't nominated and who does or doesn't win.

This year? It would be cool if Ellen Degeneres could be nominated, because she was just great as "Dory" -- and Albert Brooks wasn't bad, either -- but that won't happen. So I guess all I care about is Sean Penn.

9. I'm a hugh movie fan

and make it a point to see as many as I can that are getting good reviews from critics and my friends. I LOVED "In America", "Pieces of April," and "Monster." IMHO, Charlize Theron's performance is the best I've seen by a male or female in my entire lifetime. It's been almost a month since I've seen "Monster" and I still can't forget her performance. I'm not into the LOTR but I may try to see it cause it seems to be getting a lot of buzz. I think that means I'll have to rent the first two first.

10. The Oscars, only slightly less rigged than the 2000 selection

Don't get your hopes up for Murray. He made a statement about the Oscars saying what a sham they are. Talk like that usually that spells the kiss of apathy for the person. Jackson has said similar things, but the Academy's guilt at not giving him an Oscar the first two times might be enough to outweight that.
