WOWZA this is NOT pretty - Hurricane Dean

My money is on the Yukaton Pennisula, which includes some of Mexico's biggest tourist attractions, will be recovered and rebuilt well before New Orleans & the gulf coast is finally returned back to normal.

1. ... is it finished with Jamaica?
... the company I work for has a call center there. I'm wondering if it's under water.

4. From what I've heard, they mainly had
a lot of trees down, some bldg damage, and flooding, no fatalities.

9. I thought I heard 8 fatalities
but that the storm was not a direct hit for them.

Even so... a storm that big, they're lucky to get away w/ "some" damage... as opposed to major devastation.

6. What?! Where'd you read or see that?

Weather channel hasn't reported anything like that. I'd like to read that account of damage to Jamaica.

7. suppose the US will offer aid to Cuba the way they offered aid to us
after 9/11 and Katrina? I bet W is getting his rocks off thinking about Cuba being flattened. RE the Yucatan, I don't think Cancun has a whole lot of beach left to spare. They lost so much beach after Gilbert and Hugo back in the late 80s.

8. Riviera Maya is going to get pounded
The storm surge from Tulum north will be pretty strong. Looks like the eye will cross around Punta Allan in the Sian Kaan biosphere. Its a less populated area but a lot of poor Mayas live in thatch and pole pulapas

The Akumal and Playa Del Carmen cams have been taken down.
