29. Quality vs. appearance
Not that I'd ever own an Aztec, I just don't think it belongs on a list with the Yugo: you go; you just don't go very far.

They forgot the Chevy Chevette. What a piece of crap that was.

Edited on Mon Jan-26-04 03:17 PM by XNASA
I'm no GM fan by any stretch, but the Aztek is actually groundbreaking in it's dimensions.

If you're not the type who's hung up on looks, the Aztek is quite practical.

No, I don't own one. Nor will I ever. It's too ugly. :eyes:

16. It said worst cars, not ugliest door stops
As a long time owner and driver of TR-3's and TR-4's, I can say the TR-7 was a nightmare in every way.

Terrible styling, poor performance, combined with the worst quality control British industry ever saw and with the added really attractive plaid seats.

Mmmmmm, that's stylin.

The 1957-62 Trabant was not much different from the 64-91 model. I'd say the list entry should be :
Sachsenring Trabant (1957-91)

43. IIRC...
I tbelieve the German Government is encouraging Trabant owners to turn in their cars so that they can be scrapped because these cars had absolutley zero pollution controls (East german engineering at its finest).

The problem is, that so many Germans are in love with these POSs that they are outright refusing to have them scrapped.

10. Mazda RX-7 should be on the list.
Let's see, I started out woth an orange, yes ORANGE, rambler of some kind in the early 70's. It was my first car. I traded it in for an MGB...the last model they made. I then got a used MGB. Then I got mature and got a Honda Civic. Then I had a mid life crisis and got a Mazda RX-7. Worst car I ever had not only because it broke down all the time but because I had a teenage boy with a new drivers license...three quesses how he drove that car!

14. Guess it depends what "worst" means

The Pacer, Vega and Edsel were all pretty reliable and durable- especially the Edsel. The Pacer was butt-ugly and the Edsel was mistimed to market, but worst?

24. Early Vegas Were NOT Reliable
They had aluminum engines without cylinder sleeves. Even when you changed the oil regularly, they turned into oil burners.

I know - I owned a '73 hatchback.

27. I test drove a Vega in early '70s
about 1971-72, I think.

I remember it had an aluminum block, and how much the whole car vibrated. I remember looking at the gear-shift lever on the floor of the car and seeing it shake unrelentingly. I thought I was in one of those paint-mixing machines at a hardware store...

17. I dissent. I had 3 friends with 3 Fieros and they loved them
That article is bull. More Nippon-worship, perpetuating that self-imposed self-loathing for American cars. I had a 1978 Datsun that was a rattletrap rustbucket with inferior tires, terrible handling and brakes that always needed replaced. It was hardly head and shoulders above my buddy's Vega.

I loved my Renault Dauphine!

bought it for $25 in 1969 (it was a '61). When it died my fraternity made a couple of hundred bucks on it in a car bash.

Got me back and forth to college for three years....used more oil than gas.

My sister had a Vega, while I had a Pinto (first car for each). I also came close to another when I bought a Renault Alliance. Can't have been much better than the Dauphine, even though it looked good.

26. Ford anything
Found On Road Dead
Fix Or Repair Daily

Their entire product line from 1995 to 2000 (and probably beyond that) is known for:

  • blowing head gaskets every 70,000 km. or earlier
  • second gear is made out of plastic, not metal
  • unfathomable electronics problems
  • "Oh, you wanted tires that run in hot weather? That'll be extra."
  • "No, you're not supposed to be able to unlock the doors. Better security that way."
  • "Yes, the heater is supposed to be on all the time. Expecially when the air conditioner's on."

and other unmitigated horrors.

33. Chevy Cavalier!
Every one I've ever known that's owned one has regretted it within 3 years.

My family bought Chevys for years since my uncle was a parts manager for them. After a series of bad cars in the 80s (80 Citation, 79 Chevette) we started buying Japanese.

I'm convinced that Chevrolet is a French word meaning "piece of shit."

Mrs. Ironflange had one during her student days, and it was pretty decent. Lucky she never got rear-ended though. It had the V-6 in it, and I swear that thing could lay down strips on dry pavement, it left most cars standing.

49. Renault Alliance
Used as much transmission fluid as oil. I think the gears were made of lead, they wore out so easily. Lost 5th gear many times on the highway. The cruse control had a mind of its own, it would surge to 80 then drop to 50 at random times.
I put it under an old pine tree for a hurricane hoping it would be crushed. The tree went the other direction. We bought it because my ex thought it was "cute". I ended up driving it all of the time.
The radio was good
