Need some DU good karma please!
Weather permitting, I'm flying from Detroit to Phoenix on Tuesday with my 77 year old mom. She had back surgery in November, and can get around for short distances with a walker but we're going to need a wheelchair for getting around the airport. Dad drove out a few days ago and is there waiting for us, he'll pick us up at the airport. Mom's a nervous flyer anyway, but she's anxious about things going well now particularly since she has limited mobility. She's also from the generation, and was raised such that she's uncomfortable being without my dad or one of her son's or some other male authority-type figure coming along.

I've travelled alone and otherwise a lot, and I've done everything I can think of to be sure we're prepared and will get the wheelchair, and have plenty of time. My dad very kindly purchased our tickets, and then I used my frequent flyer miles to upgrade us to first class ... at least we'll have a little more seat room, and be close to the rest room on the plane. I've talked with mom about our preparations, and our transportation to the airport is all set.

I guess I need some good vibes and good weather ... at least good enough to get off (and stay off!) the ground from Detroit and get moving westward!

Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm off to the warm of Arizona for a week. :hi:

6. Thanks
I try to be good to my parents ... they did a good job with what they had, and a much better job than (IMHO) their parents did.

FYI--daughter

Thanks for the karma!

9. oh, thanks for insider info
everyone's been nice on the phone with me--and my dad called separately too, but apparently last year there was a lot of waiting and walking involved when she went with my sister ... I don't know what preparations were made then.

my mom looks like a little old mrs. claus/grandma, with beautiful white hair, hopefully she'll be having an up day and people will react like they usually do--as if she's their grandma--and help me help her relax and have a good time.

15. I would be surprised if they don't treat Mom
like Royalty especially in First Class. Let us know how it went.

4. Wheelchair service is HEAVENLY in crowded airports. They treat you
very nicely.

I messed my knee up badly the night before flying off to China, and was at first very embarrassed to be using the wheelchair service. But I got to liking it A WHOLE LOT especially bypassing the long lines for check in, customs, immigration and so on.

I felt guilty, a little, but there was no way I could walk with my knee just torn to shreds.

Slip yer ma a martini, she'll be FINE.

10. that's good to know, I'll tell mom
well, she's not really supposed to drink alcohol since she's diabetic; maybe I can talk her into smoking a doobie with me :smoke: (I've often wanted to ask her!).

I think everything will really be fine, but we both tend to suffer from "pre-event anxiety."

12. keeping an eye on the weather tonight
yeah, I've been checking weather report. I think I've flown on much worse snowy day than today, so as long as tomorrow before 1pm isn't any worse than today we should get off the ground all right.

13. hugs back at ya Laura
please do feel free to keep the freezing in Detroit!

Actually, several years ago when we had unseasonably warm weather in Michigan in January, it was colder in Arizona when I was there than it was at home. Bummer!

thanks :toast:

11. As soon as you get there, go to the information booth
(unless they approach you first).. They should take very good care of you, and unless things have changes a lot, first class passengers have access to the hospitality rooms prior to the flight..

Good luck & enjoy the warm weather :)

14. thanks for reminding me about the hospitality rooms
I don't fly first class often, thanks for reminding me about those. That will be more pleasant for waiting I'm sure. I was hoping to get some perks besides the larger seats by travelling first class.

Love your kitty picture, I've been meaning to tell you. Cracks me up every time "who shot my paw?"

I love the Arizona "dry heat" as long as its not over 100 degrees.
