What's the BEST Car You've Ever Owned???
For me, it's my wife's 1993 Plymouth Sundance. We bought it new, and it now has 107,000 miles on it. Other than tune-ups and belt replacements, we've had the following mechanical work done on it:

* - Front brake pasd at 60,000 miles.

* - Rebuilt transmission at 105,000 miles.

That's it - not bad for over 100,000 miles.

15. My '92 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4.
Purchased used at 100,000Kms, with the indestructable 22RE 4-cyl motor. It was a repo, so I was taking my chances,, not knowing how well the previous owner maintained it. But not a single major repair so far, after 250,000KMs. Touch wood! I voluntarily changed the timing chain and tensioner set at 150,000Kms, only to discover it was the original one, and was in like-new condition.

No rust, either :D

But, I should also add it's the slowest vehicle I've ever owned.

1971 Super Beetle
Certainly not the most comfortable car (no air, vinyl seats) but it always started and was insanely cheap to operate. A major tune-up was under $50. I mean, there's not much there to tune-up!

It had plenty of character, as well.

I owned it from 1993-1996.

24. '74 BMW 2002
Which I bought in 1990 for (relative) peanuts from the original owner and drove for ten happy years along the mean streets of Los Angeles. How I loved that car. When it was car-jacked from me at gunpoint, the cops found it within a week. Cost me two grand to have it ressurected, but well worth it. When, several years later, I moved to NYC from L.A., I donated the car to charity. A couple years after that, a BMW aficianado from upstate New York emailed me to say that's he'd bought the car at auction and had totally restored it. He hadn't just restored it---he'd turned it into a work of art. I got tears in my eyes as I looked at the photos of what he had done to my favorite car ever. And now it will live on for many a moon.

I miss that car. It was red, and the first car I ever bought new. When I finally traded it in a couple of years ago the mileage was over 100 grand, and I never had a single problem with it. The dealer complimented me on what good condition it was in, but it really wasn't all that hard. It seemed to take care of itself.

26. 1993 Ford Aerostar XL
I'm still driving it, 240,000 km on it, and will drive it into the ground. Great with the kids, comfy, nice ride. I've hauled loads of over half a ton with it. We tow the trailer all summer, up long hills in hot weather, no complaints from it. We love to head up the backroads, even high-clearance roads, in it. It was made when "Built Ford Tough" meant something. Only major problem has been the obligatory head gasket replacement soon after the warranty ran out. Other than that, only wear and tear, like the starter motor, rear wiper motor (replaced it myself), heater hose, that's about it. One strange thing is that it kind of eats mufflers. Other than that, it's been great. I've carefully followed the scheduled maintenance.

Just this morning, I went out, started it, and drove away. It was -30 and it hadn't been plugged in. It's supposed to hit -38 tonight, and I'm not plugging it in. I know it'll start; the block heater is busted anyway.

I bought it new for $8000, drove it 144,000 miles with only one breakdown at 90,000 miles (which Toyota covered). It got 22 mi/gal (good in those days). At 144,000 miles a rock kicked off the road and dented the oil pan near the drain bolt, causing a slow leak that would have cost $900 to fix. I sold the car (for $3000, acknowledging the leak) and had people calling me up constantly to see if I'd sold it yet.

I now have a 1996 Honda Civic (33 mi/gal) with 128,000 miles. It runs great, so it's my second best.

The worst car? My 1994 Mercury Sable. I bought it new. Everything was broken by 60,000 miles except the engine, which blew at 76,000 miles. I will NEVER again own a Ford product. The worst (grating) advertising lie: "Quality is job #1."

40. '89 Toyota Landcruiser
Rugged and roomy and ever reliable. White with a classy brown wood-looking strip running across its center. Amazing how many turned heads I would get from passing motorists while touring with my Landcruiser and unique TrailManor pull trailer.

Not that the Landcruiser pulled worth a damn. The engine was underpowered for its size and I created many a 20-car lineup while tugging uphill.

The Cruiser finally gave out a few years ago, bum transmission at 287,000 miles! But not until it had conquered 49 states, including Alaska, and plenty of Canada.

41. For sheer cost effectiveness, a 1980 Chevy LUV pickup
I bought it new, and only sold it two years ago. It was my first car. In those 22 years, I put 250,000 miles on it, four sets of tires, two clutches, one carburetor, one alternator, two sets of belts and hoses. That's it. I figure that trucklet ended up costing me less than a penny per mile, all told (not counting fuel, of course).

But of the cars I've had, I like the one I have now best overall. My 2002 Subaru Forester is roomy, fuel-efficient, a lot of fun to drive, and very practical.

I bought this car last summer for $600. A week later the clutch went out.

I put it in the garage, jacked it up, got the transmission out (having a vast vocabulary of obscenities helps) and hauled the clutch to the local Honda dealer.

"How old is this car?" 1986.
"When did you get it?" Last week.
"This is the original clutch. See here? Most people don't buy Honda's clutches because they think they're really expensive. But this is an original Honda clutch, and it has a 1986 date of manufacture on it." I bought Honda's clutch. If they last that long...

Runs perfect. 65mph in fifth gear at 2250RPM.

Yes, the heat could have been better, but what a car (bought used in 1969). Actually fixed the engine one time with a paper clip and rubber band. Held the road beautifully. $2 went all week (19 cents a gallon, then.) Stick, of course, and had lots of pep. Did some contortionist things there with lovely girls in the college days. Loved to drive it; had it until 1974, when a guy ran a red light at Michigan State and creamed it. Someone still bought it for a dune buggy chassis. Have had many new cars since then. Gimme my Bug.

they were roomy as hell, very easy to work on(even under the hood was roomy-you could have fit two engines in there), and were great little runners that didn't guzzle gas.

I actually owned 6, if you count the one I bought just for parts...I even used it's transmission to change one from a manual to an automatic.

53. 1985 Chrysler K Car
Doors didn't close tightly, I had to jiggle the ignition to get the key to turn, the car choked in too hot or too cold weather, and it went from 0 to 60 in about 20 seconds (if I was going downhill)...

Oh, wait a minute, this is the BEST car thread...

In that case, it was a 1989 Chevy Sprint (made by Suzuki) that gave 50 mpg on the highway, more than 40 around town, never burned oil, and took me effortlessly cross country for a song (with the hatch doubling as a mini-camper).

58. Best car...best car...
Well, thats hard to answer, CO.

I loved my geo metro. I drove from the twin cities MN to yuma the first time I met my GF, and it cost like 46.00 for the drive.

I love my s-10 blazer, 1991, loaded, and paid 300 for it. 155k on her now, but still doing ok.

My favorite car was *GASP* my '68 SS 396 chevelle. She was a guzzler for sure, but jeez what a solid car. That car could leave rubber on the road at 90 MPH going in a strait line. May she rest in peace.:-(

Best I would have to say was the GEO. That car was low maintanance, easy to work on, cheap insurance, and always started in the winter. No creature comforts, though. And hampster powered, or so it felt.

60. '94 Honda Accord
Nearing 160,000 and still runs and looks like a new car. I caused the only problems I have had with the car when I hit a pole in a parking lot.
