Prophet, darkstar, and other dead fans...
I probably posted this before, but I revisited the archives site today and found a rehearsal from 1971 when Keith just joined the band. They were working up "Jack Straw" with these alternate lyrics. I've been singing them all day...maybe they should have developed these more.

We can jump the tollgate
Save us 50 cents
I'd bet you my last dollar
But it's already spent
We can jump the watchman
Right outside the fence
Take his books but leave his change
Now ain't that heaven sent?

3. Hey...what up?
I've really been having trouble logging in--free muni-wif-fi needs a repair or sumpting coz I was getting it free in my apt. Now I have to be down the street at Mexican joint for hassle -free surfing.

Like your new avatar.

Figguring you missed it and weren't simply repulsed, here's is a pic of me on either my birthday (50!!) or Ms. Darkstar's (they are back to back).

Please note how my t-shirt coordinates with avatar.

Here's Ms. Darkstar:

Thanks for the lyrics. Never heard 'em that way. They turned it into more of a loser/drifter type tune, it seems....

:hi:

Great to meet you on a GD thread. Jack Straw On Europe '72 does indeed rock. So perfect the way it shifts gears up and down.

6. darkstar...
So nice to finally see your pic!!

Both you and your lovely wife look great! Also...great shirts...the both of you.

You are a very kind looking man, and you look VERY similar to my neighbor's brother (I know that can't mean much to you, but the resemblance is uncanny).

Thanks for posting, and nice to read you again. :hi:  :pals:

ALSO: Happy Birthday my friend!!!!

8. Ever Hear The Additional Lyrics To I Know You Rider?
I think they were on Dick's Picks 8 (though I could be mistaken. Maybe 4 or 5?). I never heard them again except on that album and always wondered if that was they only time they did them.

15. Kinda Close, But Not Really. They Were:
I'd rather drink muddy water and sleep in a hollow log (x2)
than stay here in frisco and be treated like a dog

18. Yes...
I'm thinking of the Hot Tuna version.

That was Harpur College...5/2/70.

Subsequently called SUNY Binghamton, then Binghamton University, men's gym.

My hometown....I was only 12, but I know people who were there.

They describe the weird energy there that evening.

A couple had sex near the band during "Dancin'"

Phil's comment: We'd like to thank the fella who got it on over here with his girlfriend ...and we're gonna take a short break, and we want you to all feel each other while we do".

20. Wow. How'd You Know That? LOL
Thanks for the info though. So that was the only time they sang them then? I always enjoyed that version cause it made "I know you rider" that much longer, and it's one of my favorite dead tunes.

21. Well, it is my hometown and that show is considered by some...
to be their best.

My first show was the famous Cornell 1977 Barton hall show.

Holy cow....what an introduction!

22. Also....
they may have done these lyrics acoustically for a few other shows in 1970.

23. That's Awesome. I Miss Goin To Shows So Badly.
Every summer I feel the void from not having been able to go to a Dead show at Giants Stadium, which was a yearly ritual. And every time I talk (or in this case type) about any Dead shows, I can't help but have the resonating thought in my head of "God I miss ya Jerry".

11. Nice find.....
One of my favorite songs in their canon. "Jack Straw from Wichita gunned his buddy down". I really loved the late eighties versions, when Bobby just drops bombs in the jam.

Syracuse '84...first set closer.

Phil bombed out the final jam....repeatedly.

Huge crowd swell...the best Jack Straw I've witnessed personally. :hi:
