Any single-malt Scotch fans here? I've found a bargain!
A friend of mine brought a bottle to a party, and I tried it. Yum. I thought it excellent. Comparable to Cragganmore.

Price? $20.99 a bottle. (Cragganmore, Lagavulin, etc run $38-45)

He said to grab it while it was still cheap, cause once word got out...

So a few months later, I stopped by the store to see if they had it. They didn't, so they special-ordered it for me.

I tried it when I got home, and my memory of it was correct. Hands-down one of the best single-malts I've ever had. Amazing that it's only 10 years old.

From the site where I found the picture below:

"Full golden-yellow hue. Smooth sandalwood and malty aromas. Elegant mineral, sweet-malt flavors with a touch of caramel sweetness on the medium-bodied palate. Finishes crisply."

Yeah, what they said.

2. Not a Scotch drinker here
But I've been selling it for a few years now so you may be in luck on the price because it's stayed pretty steady.

I figured it wasn't much good because of that.

Good to know - my SO likes Scotch. :hi:

4. I'm curious about markup
What's wholesale and retail for that?

How long has it been around? My friend implied it had just come into the US. (or maybe it's new to Atlanta, or to Atlanta distributors)

(and I'm impressed that you remember the price history of a particular brand! :patriot:)

7. There's a very high markup on liquor
We make a lot of our profit in my department because of that - it's over 50% in many cases. I've been selling it for at least 3, maybe 4 years but you may be right about it being new to Atlanta - I get a lot of stuff before other areas of the country. My area tends to be a good test market.

As for recalling the price history, that, my friend, is my job. I can also tell you exactly where on the shelf that particular bottle is which isn't bad considering I've been out on disability since January (when I'm in my store shopping and I see my replacement standing before the shelves with a bottle in hand and a vacant look in his eyes, I will tell him, "Second shelf down, about a foot to your right" - he's always amazed. :) ).

8. Do you remember what Speyburn sells for there?
Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 01:05 PM by kay1864
IIRC Atlanta is a bit cheaper than other states in the South, but I don't know about the rest of the country. It's tough for me to remember prices since I buy maybe one bottle of liquor a year. And when I flew more I'd buy it at Canadian duty-free, which was cheaper than anywhere U.S.

And for comparison, what do Cragganmore and Laphroaig sell for there?

You mean it costs $60 here, and 25 Euros elsewhere? Yikes. 25 Euros is about US$34.

16. Double yikes
Now I know why I haven't bought Laphroaig. I can get Cragganmore for $35-40. Or at least that's what it was a couple years ago.

6. Yes, Laphroaig is VERY smoky--wonderful stuff.
I preffered the 15 year old stuff myself--it was definitely more assertive than the 10 year old stuff. Both are excellent though. They are also kind of a love it or hate type of thing--even among Scotch drinkers.

Mmmmmmmmmmm Laphroaig....

9. ?
If you like Paddy's Irish whiskey the Laphroaig sounds like a safe bet eh? I had an Aussie bartender in Dublin that wouldn't serve my friend and me Paddy's because she said it was "too rough"
I didn't argue and had another wonderful pint of Guinness and a green spot which was recommended by a well known whiskey conni suer. Great stuff if you can get it. I only saw it in Dublin non of the small town pubs had it.

:P

Hey, all last summer I was drinking 4 o'clock vodka because it was something like $12/litre and it WASN'T good. How much happier I would have been to have been steered in the direction of a bargain bottle that doesn't taste like lighter fluid, hmmmmm?

You Rock! :yourock:
