143. A lamp that has a dead bulb!
That's exactly the main feature on my nightstand. (Actually, my nightstand is called the "princess table"--a vanity table with little embroidered stool and big oval mirror.) I have a little desk lamp with a dead bulb I screwed out laying by it, a bulb I thought would match that didn't laying next to that, a ceramic tray from a dollor store with a kind of faux-enamel(that would be paint, I reckon) Chinese design full of assorted chains, earrings, rings, small change from emptying pockets, and a hard candy--which is peculiar, because I do not myself ever eat hard candy.

I also have the following:

three wooden cigar boxes of decreasing size--the bottom-most being he widest and flattest, which contains cotton gloves, nail-clippers, cuticle cream, diamond nail file, small scissors, and a buffer. I could have very nice nails, if I opened that box more often. The middle-sized box is, I believe, empty. I have not figured out what to do with it--but as long as the fine cigars my wubboo likes come in wooden boxes that are rather nice, I will feel weird about disposing of them. The littlest is the size of a pack of playing cards--the slightly larger, bolder-type playing cards older people might use. I have some jewelry packed in it--but I think I might swap the set of baubles I have there for tarot cards.

A 1st century AD terra cotta oil lamp (empty) from ancient Roma. For all I know. I got it on ebay. Looks old. I've been tempted to splash some olive oil in it with a bit of twine and take it for a spin--but no. Dead bulb aside, Edison's gimmick makes safer and cleaner light.

A gel deodorant with a busted dial. The dial thingie is supposed to twist a plastic screw that levers up a platform that raises ever so slightly to push the gel out of the holes in the top of the deodorant to some lab-test amount. The dial does not work on this one--it did not work on the other one I bought with it, which I discarded after squeezing the plastic case to the point where it would no longer deposit it's no-particular-measurement amounts of stink-retardant goo. I am too thrifty to toss away the broken armpit-hygeine delivery product, and since I bought the handful of pitty-swabs I have on sale some time ago, I can't return'em. Which means I shall use them to strengthen my hands while I weaken my BO.

A very old paperback novel--Kilgore Trout's Venus on the Half-Shell. Which was actually written by Phillip Jose Farmer, and not by the actually fictional Trout, a mind-child of Vonnegut. Having read lots of sf, I figured I had to read this one, and am half-way through--it reminds of Douglas Adams, kind of. Makes me want to read more Farmer. The paperback has pages of a startling orange hue--from age. They look like victims of a self-tanner incident, but the book is in good shape, otherwise. It was printed in 1975. I was released in 1972, myself, and use self-tanner, but not to the point of looking like a 30-yr old paperback. This will be my test from here on in--hold up the page, as it were, to life: Do I look like thirty-year old paper? Then, perforce, I shall exfoliate.

Nail-polish remover and a single cotton square-shaped pad. There is enough liquid in the bottle to probably dissolve one hand's worth of polish, which is about the job of one cotton square. I have two hands, and my fingernails are currently bare, although my toenails, rather smaller, are Maybelline Foreverstrong Berry Persistent red. They could be that way for sometime. Toes do not require frequent costume changes. Should I polish my nails, and come to needing a fixup, I will need to go to the stash of cosmetics under mt "princess seat" (the embroidered stool that came with my "princess table.") They reside in a clear plastice tote ostensibly designed for organizing office files.

The clutter of jewelry and cigar boxes and light bulbs rest on a woven placemat. It is blue and has a kind of mock-up of a Carribean shipping label--sort of. I have not actually seen the design for some time. It protects the cherry-stained wood of the "princess-table" and defends it from dust.

Somehow, I have enough room to reliably lay down my glasses upon the nightstand in the dark when I finally shove off to slumberland, and to find them again in the dim light of morning, with clutching fingers like a palsied albino spider twitching over the srewn landscape--nothing knocked over, things easily found.

Although I have paused with an earring in one hand and the other hand pacing about the chaos searching for its mate--only to look in the mirror to find I was wearing it. This usually happens five minutes after I was *supposed* to leave in the morning. Just after I locate my watch.

(Of Which, upon the princess table, there may be as many as three at any time, two working, one non-working, if I'm lucky the ones both working being set to the current time. I like to say, Daylight Saving's changes means the other half of my timepieces get use.)

there is a bottle of water on the floor *beside* the night stand--for kitty water dish filling purposes. (Yes, I give my cats BOTTLED water. Spoiled little brats that they are. The older cats even get the bottled water dumped into a kitty fountain, where it is filtered AGAIN).

And there are *numerous* kitty toys throughout the room...but the night stand is too high for Kyra.

by the left side of the bed.

There's more books on the floor below the nightstand.

On the right side there's another one with a pile of Scientific American, a heavy duty flashlight, and a spanner wrench.

Edited on Thu Aug-23-07 06:53 PM by skater314159
Currently (I just went and checked):

a cat (sleeping)
a dying cactus (the cat likes to bite the cactus... which so far I've let her do, as if I try to save the cactus, she bites ME)

and nothing else, as the cat knocks off anything else that isn't "hers".

142. My dear Inchworm!
I fully accept that I told you the contents of the drawer freely!

I wanted to disclose, baby!

I've been fine....thanks for asking!

I lit the little candle just once, long ago!

My husband's not too much into candles these days...

145. Yes, same Dresden.
There were a lot of differences between the book and the tv show, but the show was still good.

I read here the other day that the show was canceled. :(
