What's the un-crappiest (best) car you ever owned?
We've got the automotive downside (and amusing) thread going.

So, what's the best car you've owned? Doesn't have to be the most reliable, nor have the best mileage. It just has to be your favorite, fondest memory or best serving four-wheeled automobile you've owned.

For me, although I love my PR5, my 1987 Buick Grand National is the best car I've ever owned. Legendary, fast, reliable, comfy, safe...saved my life, matter of fact. In a straight line, she billed with the gawds (and she hauled my WaveRunners).

1. I've had two great cars: 1993 Honda Accord coupe and 1994 Infiniti G20.
I have the G20 now. Reliable. Quick. Corners on rails. Decent on gas.

The Honda was my first ever brand new car. Had 107k miles on it when I totalled it. Still on the original clutch. Great car.

54. MY Favorite car
was the 84 Firebird I owned. I got it right before I got out of the military and it was one bad ride. It had the 305 4bbl, T Tops, and it would move. I had to get new tires for it right after I got it because it simply could not (ok it was me) accelerate worth a damn on the tires it had, they were just too small LOL.

My wife just absolutely LOVES her accords. She has had 3 of them, the first was the 89 but she was hit head on during a snow storm and it was totaled. From her settlement she picked up a 93 Accord back in 95, that one was recently replaced because a deer didn't like the car and jumped in front of her. That car had 350K on it and still ran strong, never had the head off, just kept up on the preventative maintenance and it ran like a top. We now have a 04 Accord that is simply loaded, V6, Sunroof, 6 disk in dash cd, V6, Leather, and its a total dream to drive.

So now we have the Durango that we use for the heavy shopping trips, hauling the dogs, etc... I drive that in the winter, and when its raining, and during the warmer months I ride a 93 Honda Nighthawk 750. Cant beat the 40+ mpg I get on that thing.

62. Welcome to DU!
I've had Hondas since 1975. First was a used '75 CVCC. Then an '84 Civic, 89 Accord, 93 Accord and now I have a '94 Accord EX with 180k on it. I had to put a transmission in it last year. :(

I'm driving a '00 Taurus. It was the only car I could afford that the bank would consider financing (only 53,000 miles on it). The Honda belongs to my daughter Lelapin when she's home from school. I miss driving an Accord every day. Best cars on the road.

Yeah, the keyless start is what attracted me to the Altima in the first place.

That's not mine but the color is right. I got mine fully loaded with the navigation system, XM radio, sunroof, leather seats, climate control, and the works. Gets 35 MPG and I can drive about 400 miles before a fill-up.

It is rusting a bit but I have never had a better car. It has 156,000 and it doesn't leak a drop of oil. I had to have the plugs replaced recently but other than that it has saved me tons of money. It is the first car I have ever paid off and have been driving free for years!

It's better on gas than the other cars I've owned and pretty much trouble-free, other than that pesky front main seal I have to get fixed. Guess I'll be putting in some overtime over at the plant I work at. But at least it only has 76k miles on it.

My little green Corolla was a real joy to drive. Great gas mileage and plenty of get-up-and-go, but when it was totalled in a head-on collision, I wound up with a Camry instead. Gas mileage isn't as great, but it gives my wife some much-appreciated legroom, and it's super-comfy for extended trips.

5 speed, excellent mileage, ran up 175K before it died.

I also love my current ride, a 2001 Chrysler Sebring 4 door. Very comfortable, handles like a dream, running like a top with 94K on it already and I can still drive from Ft Worth to Little Rock on 1 tank of gas, with the AC on full board.

The stereo did die and I need to get a new one put it, before I drive to Kentucky in October.

LOL I chose this model car strictly because of the comfort of the driver's seat. It has lived up to original expectations.

oops--I posted on the wrong thread.

Correct answer here is my present car: a 2003 (bought it new back then) BWM 525 stick shift.
I still like it plenty, and as I don't drive it much (mostly to the train station or the
airport and back), I don't abuse it at all. It has behaved just fine so far. If it gets uppity
on me, it might get traded in for a new Prius--gas at $7 a gallon does things to the way you
look at stuff like that. But so far, it is just easier to get locally-made cars serviced.

Finally, the sheer girth and weight of the thing collapsed the motor-mounts and she was banished to the bone yard.

Drove like a rocket, never broke down, small so you could park it anywhere or do a u-turn in a tight space, yet I could fit more stuff in it than any other larger car I've had, and it was cheap. I moved the entire contents of my house in that car once (obviously many trips and stuff hanging out the back, but everything fit in it).

It was good little car. I had it for about ten years and it never left me on the road. I remember I was able to drive it up hills in snow when much more expensive cars could not get up the hills.
It needed a new transmission (it was an automatic) at about 110,000 miles. At that time, I traded it in. It is now 12 years later and I still have my 1995 BMW 525. It is also a good car.

I have to admit that I've had pretty good luck with cars to this point - I can't say that I've ever had a crappy one.

We drove the shit out of that car for about 10 years, probably put 110,000 miles on it, and the only work we ever had to have done (outside of oil changes, timing belt, etc.) was replacing the distributor cap ($60) and clearing the air conditioner drain hose (free). That car was amazing.

64. My '85 Nissan Maxima Wagon (diesel)
Great car. Very reliable. Lots of get up and go. Never drove like a diesel or acted like one. Had a nice interior, very comfortable and got me everywhere I needed to go (including off-road - I demand a lot from my cars. The first question I ask of a salesperson is, "How's it go in the woods?").

My ex took it to NYC one day where it got creamed by a gypsy cab and totaled.

66. my last two cars were Toyotas
I totalled the Tercel after 118,000 miles but it was running strong

My Corolla went 234,000 until I traded it in. I think it was about to need a fuel pump.

The mark II Skoda Octavia VRS. These are pictures I took after I had just picked it up, brand new, just 8 miles on the clock:

Puny maybe by American standards, but it has a 2.0-litre FSI turbo plant that develops 200bhp:

It has a manual six-speed close-ratio gearbox. It can do 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds (manufacturer's figures) and tops out at 149mph (again, manufacturer says). I have had 140mph out of it myself (but you didn't hear that).

It has some nice details:

particularly the green brake calipers:

and inside it is quite plush:

It's quite well equipped too, with dual-zone climatronic AC, xenon headlamps and a pumping hifi that sounds stunning.

:D

Okay, I know. I love this car way too much.

I still own it. Never had any problems, it has over 130,000 miles on it, and gets 36 mpg. I bought it used in 2001.

200 HP, corners like its on rails. 26 mpg. Is buying it at 55 years old mid life crisis or a senior reward?
