"Flying" - a poem written by my father. |
|
Taken from his book of poetry. One of his goals in life was to learn how to fly- it was something he succeeded in doing. He flew Cessnas until his heart forced him back to earth. I used to go up with him- we'd fly through the clear Ohio country nights, wishing we didn't have to stop before we reached the stars. ---
FLYING
It’s difficult to comprehend That many have never flown Above the earth on silver wings, To view firsthand, realms unknown.
To sense the heights of ecstasy In the wake of a singing pro, Upward reining an eager stallion, Past bound’ries where eagles stop.
Lazily circling patchwork plots, Tracing homes along a street, Or travel’ing twice the range of autos, Returning home in time to eat.
But the glory has its cost, Which pilots-to-be must pay— One must heed laws of aeronautics If he would fly another day.
Gracefully accepting changes In Nature’s weather-store, And never, ever defy her whims, Should we hope to fly some more.
And knowing arts of navigation, To find “roadways in the sky” Will assure our fun and safety And make us truly love to fly.
While others slump in boredom Weekends wond’ring what to do, We’ll board our craft for Shangri-La And steal away into the blue!
When we come back to loved ones, Whether by day or night, We’ll arrive with contentment, In the glow of instrument light.
And as we sink into our pillows, Recounting ventures of the day, We’ll give thanks for the system That guides us safely all the way!

4. Better having tried and failed instead of never having tried at all. |
|
In other words, ya gotta try. No other options are acceptable.
