How many seasons of HBO's Rome are there in total?

I loved it and could have watched it all the time! Loved the town crier, the political battles, the casual salaciousness. :D

Like so many historical dramas, the time seems really comfressed. Julius Caesar ruled for 10 years before being perforated. Also, the real life Octavia married Antony. I seem to recall that her 2nd husband was Claudius' grandfather.

They were ignoring some major events that the would have needed to continue the story with some relation to reality.

For instance, Octavian was married twice before marrying Livia - and the second marriage produced his only child, Julia. He divorced her mother on the day Julia was born - and married Livia 3 days later. Livia's son Tiberius, the next emperor, later married Julia. Livia had another son, Drusus (with whom she was still pregnant when she met Octavian; Drusus was the father of the emperor Claudius, and grandfather of the emperor Caligula) and yet they left him out of the story totally - and, even more importantly, Julia. Julia was later the centre of a huge scandal for apparently sleeping with loads of senators (see 'I, Claudius', and the scene with Brian Blessed as Augustus, roaring at the top of his voice "Is there anyone in Rome who hasn't slept with my daughter?" in front of the men concerned), and the question of whether her children (from her marriage to Agrippa), or Tiberius, would succeed Augustus as emperor was a huge one in Rome.

So, despite some excellent real life material for drama, they bizarrely left that out. They weren't going to be able to tell a decent story - I wonder if they'd already decided they wouldn't try to re-cover the history written about, and shown, in 'I Claudius', so they'd decided to tell whatever story the felt like by the end of the 2nd series.

I love Rome. Production values were stellar. I bet if they had found a bigger Sopranos-sized audience though, it would not have mattered.

As others have said, it was too expensive to sustain. The BBC planned to recycle the set for the new season of Doctor Who, but it burned down.

20. Terrific show

I just got the first episode of season two in from Netflix. I can't wait to see it. It's been a year since I Netflixed the first season.

This show is superior in just about every way--sets, costumes, acting, cinematography, writing, you name it. And I love some of Titus Pullo's expressions. It's been hotter than Vulcan's cock here lately.
