Please help me figure out this math problem |
|
If you had a total of 3404. And you wanted to split this up into two parts, and one part was 9% higher than the other, how do you figure that out?
I didn't get into college based on my math SAT score!

let x = smaller of the 2 desired numbers
x + (x * 1.09) = 3404
or
2.09x = 3404
devide both sides by 2.09
x = 3404/2.09 = 1628.7 (rounded to the nearest tenth.
and x*1.09 = 1775.3
check 1628.7 + 1775.3 + 3404

4. Thanks, tho I'm confused |
|
why do you multiply by 1.09
What I did was - I started with 50 percent each. If one was 9 percent more, I added 4.5 to one and subtracted 4.5 from the other
So I had
54.5 45.5
So I did 3404 x .545 and got 1855 - And 3404 x .455 and got 1549
Those numbers are different from yours.

5. Crabby Appleton's method is "higher, by 9% of the lower number" |
|
yours is "higher, by 9% of the total score". The wording of the original problem should show which is more appropriate.
