Poll question: Which hobby is lamer, and why?
I vote for option 2. In my workplace I can think of a dozen guys who spend hours each day discussing their Fantasy Sports teams, whereas I can recall no similar conversation about Dungeons and Dragons.

And I'd have to guess that the likelihood of the average American male stepping onto the gridiron is about the same as the likelihood that he'll vanquish a dragon.

1. I don't know any D+D folk but fantasy sports
Oy. And I LIKE sports. Hell I love football (Go Skins!) but I never ever ever understood the whole
fantasy league thing. Although happily I don't know any fantasy NASCAR fans to me thats just bizarre.

2. Fantasy NASCAR?
I didn't even know that existed.

Incidentally, I've actually gotten over my former prejudicial delusion that NASCAR enthusiasts are all toothless rednecks; though I'm still not a fan, at least I'm not condemning the fans for my own preconceptions anymore!

3. Fantasy Football
Having participated...i can say I don't see the appeal. It takes all the fun out of watching games hoping that one guy gets a TD so you can "win."

They both are lame in my opinion.

5. Dragons playing football
It's so stupid--I mean, where are you going to find the pads to fit them? Why don't the idiots ever think of that?

7. The problem with fantasy sports
is they can very likely lead to a dilemma. For example, if I had a fantasy team with Oliver Perez, I might find myself wanting him to shut out the Dodgers tonight for the sake of my fantasy team. I couldn't do that, though; I'd like it very, very much if we got 26 runs off him before he throws a strike. But that would hurt my fantasy team, if I had one and he were on it.

Seems to me fantasy sports are best played in their RL sports' off-seasons.

Having a fantasy team keeps you interested in the sport.

9. Suckage doesn't enter into my fandom
This is my 43rd season with the Dodgers, and some of 'em were pretty ugly.

You don't give up on a ball club just because they aren't winning. Ask a Cubs fan. :P

15. It is a problem
I never, ever, under any circumstance draft a Yankee for my fantasy baseball team. I will go with some banjo-hitting fifth outfielder from the Nats or Royals before I touch Slappy or Captain Intangibles.

11. I don't think either are lame.
I like D&D and I like FF. Both are fun and you can win money playing FF.

14. Uh-oh
I played D&D for years, and I play fantasy baseball on Yahoo most years. I guess I'm as doomed as doomed can be!

18. The main difference I see...
is that anybody can toss a football around. Whereas these days its a bit harder to actually get into a swordfight. (and a bit more dangerous too) So at least the D&D guys are doing a fantasy version of something they can't do in real life. As opposed to the fantasy football players, who do a fantasy version of something they're willing to sit and watch, but not do themselves.

Same reason people play videogames really. Playing at something you can't do for real. Which is why I don't play sports games, but I do play sci-fi-ish and fantasy games. They're things I can't do in real life.
