Let's talk Cheese, DU....
Cheese

Cheese

Wonderful Cheese

What cheese do you like? What do you eat them with, if anything? What cheese do you *not* like? I'm all ears...

1. I like whatever I can talk them into offering me at the market.
Best way to spend half an hour, IMO.

"Oooh, and what's this one? Really? I can't imagine what that must taste like... Oh, don't mind if I do."

3. I'm a bad foodie. I've never been able to bring myself to like brie...
...or camembert or any of the soft-rinded cheeses. They all taste like mildew to me, and my throat just closes up when I try to eat some.

My favorites are the really super-sharp hard cheeses.

I like Brie, etc, alright...
Not in large doses, but I don't mind them.

I like mild cheeses, but I'm trying to branch out...I generally go for Fresh Mozzarella, Provolone, Muenster, Horseradish Cheddar...I need to eat more and different ones, I think.

6. I'm fond of manchego lately...
(and have decided to make quince paste this fall when I can get them at the farmers market to go with, as it's a classic pairing)

I also came across a sharp, hard-cheese goat cheese made by a little creamery in Humboldt County that's REALLY good. Very different--kinda gamey like goat cheese, but the sharpness of it really balanced out the earthiness I sometimes don't like about chevre.

I ordered a catalog from that place you told me about, and it was in yesterday's mail. I think I'm going to order the mozzarella kit and the hard cheese kit!

I'm finally going to try my hand at making cultured butter this weekend (remember that thread from the cooking forum?). We have a raw milk vendor at the farmers market, and I'm going to pick up a quart of double cream from him on Sunday. :9

Also making apple butter this weekend, so I'm going to be a busy girl.

I have to tell you that, being native born Mexican, I'm hard to please food-wise.

But the Boca Grande's in Cambridge and Anna's Taqueria at MIT are very good.

PS: My wife makes her own queso fresco from scratch. She's Anglo-German, but she can go toe-to-toe in the kitchen with my mother...

36. Oh, just the KFC/PizzaSlut/TacoHell just off the Route 2 rotary; remember that
we have an 11-year-old, and they're not too adventurous about food at that age.

Any recommendations for downtown Greenfield dining when Mrs R and I can get away by ourselves? Or anywhere else in that area?

We're going to try for a weekend by ourselves up there as soon as we can do it; I myself am CRAVING to go to Fitzwilly's in Northampton as soon as I can; I ate there frequently in the 1970s when I would go there to visit my (lesbian couple, what a surprise in Northampton) friends. The girls have since relocated to New Hampshire, so I've built up a strong Fitzwilly's jones over the years.

40. Ok, let's see...
In Gfld:

China Gourmet is *excellent* food
Taylor's Tavern is pretty decent. Pasta, burgers, seafood, steak, pizza etc. Nice bar too.
Cafe Koko and Green Fields Market for kickass sandwiches (GFM also has a great salad bar)
People's Pint is a brewery with good food and live music.

Fitzwilly's isn't as good as it used to be... x(
Bueno Y Sano in Noho is awesome
As is Cafe Lebanon
My absolute favorite Noho restaurant is Cafe Amanouz, it's a little hole in the wall Morroccan/Mediterranean restaurant that is to die for.

Oh, and in Deerfield on 116, Go-Ten is a really fun and nice Japanese steakhouse where they cook for you at the table and all that.

How's that for a start? :D

42. I'm copying and saving that list; especially given that it includes two
Lebanese / Mediterranean places. I do indeed like that type of chow.

What a shame that Fitzwilly's isn't what it used to be, but not much of a surprise...there's pretty much nothing that is what it was 30-plus years ago, is there? (Myself included.)

Thanks again for the list. Hey, send me a PM with an update on your parents, if you would, OK?

I had to practically put hubby on a leash first time I took him into Central Market. I knew he would go into cheese overdrive and want to buy them all

We had this Dutch spring cheese that is only available in early summer, it was outstanding.

romano, brie, monterrey jack, parmesan, mozzarella, añejo, queso blanco, cotija, duroblando...hm, it might seem we eat nothing but cheese but we mostly use it for flavorings, sprinkled on souffle, eggs, enchiladas, in tacos, etc

sometimes a sharp shredded in with light cheese', that works too

I love a nice nutty cheese with a red. Hubby introduced me to all these gourmet cheeses and I am so hooked for life.

Among my favorites are Muenster, fresh mozzarella, feta, and the sharpest of the sharp cheddar.

Never been wowed by Swiss or "smelly" cheeses.

And sometimes, the only thing that will do is a yellow square of Kraft in a grilled cheese sandwich, or Velveeta (yeah yeah - for comfort purposes mainly)
