If cats break mirrors do they have seven years of bad luck?

We recently got two cats - well about two months ago - kittens otherwise not going to a good home. They got named by my son as "Blackie" (well she's black), and "Patches" (kind of a light-grey/dark grey striped . They're cute as anything (sorry no pics yet). But they keep going in places where we don't want them - on top of kitchen counters, lounge furniture, jumping on the table while we eat, etc. There was a free standing mirror perched on some boxes (I believe it was lying flat) and I was in bed with my son reading books when I heard this almighty crash. One of the cats - unsure which one - broke the mirror. Which leaves me two questions: a) do cats get bad luck if they break mirrors, and b) how do you keep cats from places they're not supposed to be. My wife figures squirting with a water spray gets them moving away from the "unwanted" areas; I just pick up the cat and set it on the floor, and repeat until the cat gets the message.

Any ideas?

1. No, 9 lives cancels it out and they lose 7 but retain 2. If they break another one though...

Keeping them away from areas...well, we named my cat evil for a reason....
