I've had it with Antiques Roadshow!! All these people with some civil war...
signal/flare gun handle dug up while digging a trench for some septic tank or other, half rotted, rusted, no barrel, "Well there were so few of these made." value = $2,000

"Well I paid $200 for these 4 - Sun Valley ski posters." value = 10 - $15,000

"This came from my Great Uncle, then to me, he didn't much care for Tiffany." "See this little signature stamp here, this little number here? Do you have any idea how much this is worth?" "Not really." value = 4 - $6,000

"I picked up this stuff at a yard sale, paid $52." "What we have here is classic American Folk Art." value = 15 - $30,000

"My mother purchased this painting for $40." "Oh, well, what we have here yada-yada..." value 10 - $15,000

:wtf:

1. We only see a handful of the crowd on tv
the majority of people come up to the desk with some kind of antique and the appraiser says.....this is worth .50 cents

3. That show saved me taking an item to consignment which would have netted me only $10
I took it back home and checked on the internet and I almost lost a bundle.
It is a Steiff stuffed toy bassett hound from the 50's.

some lost letter of George Washington's from the front written with wet mud on his boots between some lath & plaster wall renovation value = 300,000 bucks

bet you're glad you double checked

the guy that had the Sun Valley posters put them in the classifieds for $1,000 later valued at some $15,000 i think it was who knew

So many times I watch that damn show and some person says here's this Cartier stuff my grandmother left to me. The bracelet, necklace and ring were worth several hundred thousand. The matching pieces were all nicely jewelled and set in platinum. Okay, who has grandparents who could afford Cartier? I haven't watched that show for months.

9. You know it, barb, "When my family came out west and wandered the frontier...
they acquired this blanket. I think it's Navajo. But I don't know how much it's worth. We use it to gather autumn leaves, and make blanket forts for the kids." value = essentially priceless as a one-of-a-kind, Navajo Chieftain's Ceremonial Blanket and should be placed in the Smithsonian, or Native American Museum in DC behind bullet proof glass; valued for insurance purpose' = $750,000

:wow:

11. I think I saw that show!!!
A guy had an old Navaho blanket and it was worth a real bundle and they use it for gathering leaves or covering a hole in a chair (the chair of course is then found to be an original Chippendale that they were using for a beer stand or something too).

And the people who come in with a perfectly ugly stoneware vase. REALLY ugly puke green. And they'll say it's worth 20,000.

14. That's one of the first things they tell them, treat this stuff archivally, never...
display in the sun, or expose to the atmosphere...those 'archive people' are pretty tough about that stuff

8. I loved the Frazier episode where they had some
Czar era antique that they thought belonged to a relative of theirs (Frazier, Niles, and Martin) but it wasn't their relative.

hell i may be mixing the episodes up :P

anyway, i don't watch the actual show much, but it is amazing what people "find" and the value of it...

15. my favorite was the guy with the 18th century chest of drawers
He used the top drawer to hold his movie videos. He was an older man, at least in his 70's, and he looked like he was gonna have a heart attack when they told him it was worth $350,000. He had NO idea, I think maybe he thought it was worth a few thousand. I was worried he would have a heart attack.

But let me tell you, my uncle used to clean up after estate sales, and you would not believe the stuff they would find. That was their business, he and his partner...after the sale they would by the rest for a lump sum, sell most of it on e-bay. And they would find all kind of cash stuffed in books, jewelry, etc. Things people had forgotten about. You can make a killing doing that, and find some really neat stuff, too. :hi:

they've collected at estate sales, they also bid on storage units & lockers, some times they get bupkis, sometimes they get amazing antiques & heirlooms

18. they forget
alzheimers patients and things like that. Truly...once he found a diamond ring that was like a rock, I don't know how many carats, maybe 2??? AND the insurance certificate for it and a fake ring identical to the real one that I guess she used as kind of a dummy or something rather than wear the real one.

24. My great-aunt May
She was one of those hoarders you hear about. Not animals but everything else...newspapers, magazines, etc. When she died they had to clear out the house and they found thousands in the magazines. A dollar bill at a time over 60 or so years. And they never were sure they found it all.

26. Couches and mattresses
it is common for sanitation workers here to have cash spill out of discarded furniture while they are loading it into the truck. Some people don't believe in banks or maybe they were avoiding taxes and records.

23. Did anyone see the one with the woman from Philly who found a helmet in her
attic? She and her family had moved into a house and when they were putting stuff in the attic they found this helmet - it was a helmet from the 17th or 18 century and was in perfect condition. It was worth about $250,000.
