I'll always remember that trip because it's the first bit of anything athletic that my brother attempted after getting his prosthetic leg. He'd been holed up and miserable with his mashed-up foot for six months while they tried to fix it, and then he decided to get the prosthesis. When the doctor finally gave him the go-ahead to try something, we took his kayak out to Powell and paddled and camped for three days. That sunset was the icing on the cake of our first day.

Banning Pilot huh? I spent my 10th and first half of the 11th grades at Carson High School.. Back in that time every year it was always Banning vs Carson, Banning vs Carson..

While I attended Carson High I was in Carson Highs' marching band and got to go to every game. I remember when I transfered to Pedro High and the school saw on my records that I was a Carson High band member. They asked me if I wished to be in Pedro Highs' band. It was funny because when the school's counselor took me to introduce me to the band director; the band director was excited to hear I was from Carson Highs' band. I looked at the class and asked him if this was the actual main band? He replied that yes it was and then I said "thanks but no thanks". LOL

He asked why, and I told him that just the low-brass section of Carson's band was larger than this entire band. They also didn't sound very well and I just couldn't be a part of that.. hehehe :)

I also marched the Rose Parade in 1982 with the Los Angeles All City Marching Band.

Anyway thanks nini; longshoring is a great job and I am very fortunate. Our union the ILWU is the greatest union I've been a member of - great organization.

Yes, those football games in the late 70s/80s were a blast AND half-time band showdowns were as good as the games :-) However, I think I may have booed your band once or twice :evilgrin:

My son is in the pipe-fitters union and he finally gets why I taught him the importance of being a strong union man. He used to laugh because I would NEVER buy gas from Union 76 because my dad went on strike with them in 1949 and they busted their strike with scabs. (I still won't buy gas there :-) ) -- now he understands! Dad went on to be a detective out of the harbor division so it turned out ok.

Just be careful down there on the docks.. it can get hairy as you well know.
