Poll question: Where do socks disappear to?
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 11:59 AM by Southpawkicker
I was talking to a dear friend this morning and we were talking about socks disappearing during the laundry process.

Where the hell do they go?

edited to give a new option

3. Well you do have a point...
down the drain seems unlikely as hell, I mean, surely the sucking of the water down the drain wouldn't be enough to make the socks leave the washer would it?

2. My theory, just a theory mind you,
is that lost socks are what is used to fill W's head. The vacuum in there is so strong that it constantly needs to suck more and more socks to fill the void.

is probably the same one that causes shopping carts to congregate on vacant lots.

and formed itself into a sock-like entity.

58. Well, I had read this book on the making of Star Trek the Motion Picture
And it was said the costume designer made the outfits in such a way that prevented the men from doing that.

(Trivia note: Gary Lockwood tore his trousers in the making of "Where No Man Has Gone Before". It's never been said if he wore socks there...)

65. I guess they're at my house.
I don't BUY WIRE hangers.

I almost never, ever - have any drycleaning.

I leave those hangars that stuff comes on when you buy it - at the store.

I haven't bought hangars in probably at least 10 years.

Yet, every time I turn around - there are more damn hangers than I know what to do with!

18. Every once in a while
A completely strange sock shows up in my wash - some cutesy thing with blue bunnies, or a lime-green and pink argyle number I wouldn't be caught dead wearing. So whatever system the aliens are using to hijack our socks isn't perfect. Occasionally one escapes and tries to make its way home, though - being a sock - its navigational skills are flawed.

way to summer storage.tee hee, I'm sneaking away, no more smelly feet.

LOL I saw Seinfeld live when he was an up and coming standup comic, and he did this whole riff on the missing sock, including the hitching of the ride. He was opening for Andy Williams on a concert tour, and he was hilarious.

It will either be both socks or none.

I also only wear gray socks, short in the summer, tall in the winter.

61. My view is that only one sock whats to escape, so if you tie them together
that slows down the socks that want to escape.

I have lost to many socks in the past, this system works.

Now where the socks go I have no idea, maybe sock land where all the socks are free.

My socks are staying here, the brand I buy is hard to find.

48. Look you can't expect the Universe to be perfectly seal EVERYWHERE
the combination of dryer heat, spin and the molecular make up of lint on socks is just the right key to occasionally flip open the small imperfections in the fabric of the universe and they slip through to another m-brane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-theory) that is bumping up against ours...but of course there is conservation of small, soft, linty options across the full Brane metaverse so that is where all the odd mismatched socks come from, for each sock that slips out another one slips in...but the cracks are not fixed in space at least not within our perception of space so they appear somewhere else...in vacant lots, hanging from power lines etc...

71. the explanation
in addition to being a carpenter I have in the past repaired appliances and I have found many things inside the cabinets of dryers. What happens is that the seal between the back of the drum and the case gets worn out and will permit things to go between them into the interior of the dryer. I have found many socks as well as paper money and other things that would fit through a slot.

73. Socks are the pupal stage of the life cycle of coat hangers.
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 10:07 PM by MilesColtrane
Just think about it.
You're always buying socks, you never buy hangers, yet you always have more hangers than socks.

74. I've never lost a sock doing the laundry!
I lose them afterwards, and the sock fairy has yet to leave a winning lottery ticket under my pillow as required by Section 3, paragraph 9, sub-section 14D on Reparations For Sock Thievery.

According to this particular site, the Bureau of Missing Socks has existed for years. It's so comforting to know that we are not alone.

I'm serious. Millie is determined to rid my home of the sock infestation. She's pretty bad-ass about it too.

107. My sock problem has always been monumental
The laughing joke among my friends and family was the infamous "sock cupboard". An entire cupboard in my sideboard chuck full of nothing but the little rascals that I couldn't match up at the end of a wash load.

Then came the purging. The day, about once a year, that I would sit down and try to match them up. I would ultimately fill up an entire garbage bag for tossing.

Now, I have a sock cloths-basket upstairs in the hallway. It's really full -- hundreds of socks.

If I didn't find it so reprehensible and wasteful -- I would just buy socks every week and throw them away after wearing.

105. Somewhere in the universe, there is a mountain of socks.
Every once in a while, one sock finds its match and a wedding ceremony is held. The marriage usually doesn't last, though, as socks are highly independent.
