"The Ring"..can someone explain the end to me please?? |
|
I saw this flick this past weekend and thought that it was pretty good. More of the psychologica-type of horror film as opposed to the slasher dreck that is the norm, and I was on board all the way 'til the end, and then it lost me...what were the Mom and the kid doing? Were they going to make MORE tapes and pass them around? Why did the Mom get a pass? If the Mom was carrying on with the whole thing, why? What happened to make her decide on that course of action?
Anyone else confused by this?
Anyone else care?

1. Mommy made tape for boyfriend, he gets it, she does not. 2. She figures this out. 3. She has lad make tape so someone else gets it.

I read up on the Japanese version that spawned this. Yes, the curse is "lifted" if you make a copy and show it to someone else. It's like chainmail.
They express this when she looks back after burning the tape and sees the one marked "copy" under her couch.
There were 5 Ring films in the Japanese saga. Though, I've read that only the original was high quality. They also commented that the Japanese version is WAY scarier while the American version had much better affects and a langer tape.
There is going to be a sequel. Though, it will not be based on the Japanese Ringu sequel/prequels (since they sucked). My guess is we will see Samara take up with a new family. Remember, she just "apppeared" with Mommy and Daddy when they came home from a trip. So I'm guessing she'll find a new host family to brutalize.
Perhaps a new tape will appear which will lead the protaganist back to Samara and perhaps a way to end her evil. Apparantly they are both connected to Samara now. In the Japanese version, the curse was not entirely "lifted" by passing on the chain tape.

15. Well, Naomi Watts is in it, so |
|
I would presume that means the story will follow her and her creepy son more. If there is a plot device that could get her in a wet t-shirt again, that would be a plus. Seriously, maybe the child molester thread excised from this film will become the focus--Naomi deciding what people "deserve" to watch the tape--prisoners, etc.
You think Samara will be made flesh again, somehow?
As for the original poster's question, I concur with the explanations here, as far as the ending, the dubbing of the tape=a pass, and the girl projecting her thoughts onto the tape in the cabin. There is even a reference in the film to magnetic field disruptions or something like that when Samara was around.
I'm always wary of sequels. The fact that they can't do any better for a title than "The Ring 2" ain't an optimistic sign. "Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows," anyone?

The Japanese version kind of ends glibly.

takes her son to copy the tape at the end? They go through the same ritual of copying it that she does. Then the boy asks what will happen to the next person watches it. That sort of gives you an indication.

The filmakers originally filmed a different ending which involved the mother giving the copy of the tape to a convicted child molester. However, the plot thread involving the child molester was dropped after test screenings. Apparently audiences don't respond well to plots about child molesters.

is who put the tape in the cabin office in the first place. Was it the manager who does the card tricks? Was there any signifigance to her card being a 9 of aces?
Do I need wait for the director's cut? ;)

It's kind of assumed that, because Samara's corpse was under the cabin, she projected the images onto the original tape that the kids THOUGHT was a recording of a ball game. That's where the original copy came from in the cabin. "Ringu" is VERY Japanese; meaning high melodrama and exagerrated emotions. I really didn't like it as much because it lacked subtlety.

18. Am I the only one who thought this movie sucked? |
|
It seemed like they gave some kid right out of film school millions of dollars to make a flick, and he filled it with every gimmicky bit of symbolism he could find. It seems like they just let most of the plot threads end in ambiguity. Well on topic, and I don't think this movie is very hard to follow:
Basically they acted selfishly, and made copies of the tape, to pass the ball on to the next innocent person, yes, they acted in grace and dignity, but I guess we all can't be martyrs. The mom got a pass because she made a copy and showed it to someone else, and then she had the epiphany at the end, about why her boyfriend died and she didn't, ding ding ding, she made a copy, and showed it to him, and he didn't, yay, cue the credits, send the fucker back to film school, and don't take up valuable slots on HBO where actual films with substance could be played.
