Why the 10th Mountain Division Commander got a note from the Big Dog about me
Edited on Sun Aug-26-07 09:24 PM by jmowreader
On edit: There's a post I just put in the "crappiest boss" thread that contains descriptions of three asshole bosses I've had to deal with. I fucked up and put it in its own thread at first...since I've got the thread anyway, let's play.

In April 1993, I was in the 110th Military Intelligence Battalion of the 10th Mountain Division. There was, at the time, a Situation In The World (SITW) that the 110th was best equipped to deal with. The Pentagon tasked us to watch the SITW until 8pm, at which time President Clinton was going to decide whether to bomb it. Our warrant officer tasked one analyst to cover the 8am-noon shift, me from noon until 4pm, and another analyst to close the operation out. I offered to work the whole operation because, as the only professionalized analyst in the division, I was the best equipped to deal with it. No, he wanted them to get "training in significant events" so he just wanted me to work four hours.

I walked in at the start of my shift to find that the previous analyst had generated five reports and should have put out at least thirty, including two spot reports. The timeliness was kinda close, but I generated a big pile of reports and sent them off within the first thirty minutes I was there. Then I started work on the reports I was supposed to do on my own. Eventually I got caught up.

At 2pm, my secure phone rang. It was some captain from the "White House Situation Room." He wanted to know if we'd had a shift change in the last couple of hours. During the first four hours, they were having to rewrite everything my station had sent before they presented it to the President, but in the last couple hours they've just been printing the messages out and handing them right to the president. So I made a little joke about being sorry that I was wearing his legs out running back and forth between the Situation Room and the Oval Office. "Not me. When he found out we were not editing the messages, he put a chair next to the printer so he could get the messages the second they arrived...oh, and he wants to speak to you."

Next thing you know, I'm doing a huge ad-lib briefing for the President of the United States. And he appeared to get a lot out of it. He finally asked me to work the rest of the operation and hung up. Apparently they then called the 10th Mountain Staff Duty Officer and got my colonel's home phone number, because five minutes later my jackass battalion commander called me and started screaming at me about speaking to the president without requesting permission from the battalion commander first. Huh? It's not like I CALLED the president or anything, y'know? HE called ME!!!

Ten days later I got summoned to the division commander's office to be shown the handwritten note the Big Dog sent the general. The general was highly impressed. The colonel was even more pissed.

5. Wow. Cool.
You didn't manage to snag a copy of that note, did you? That would make a very nifty souvenier.
