I don't get the difference between Steely Dan and REM.

But I'll admit that I haven't heard a lot of Steely Dan. Just what they play on the radio. I never really got into either band too much, but REM just covered "Dream #9" by John Lennon for the Darfur charity record and I really dig that tune.
