Radar Detector recommendations?
Mine finally crapped out on me this weekend after a long service life, and I'd like to replace/upgrade a bit. Prices seem to start at $40 or less and go up to several hundred. My old one was probably more in the $80 range, but I'm not averse to spending a little more if it offers better protection. I make a long drive 2 or 3 times a month which includes several speedtraps, so it'd be worth it. I'm looking at radar/laser but also maybe the "red light camera" warning, too.

Anyone here use one? Like it, dislike it?

TIA
G

1. Don't buy one
drive slower and improve your gas mileage. It's better for the environment.

8. I cite the wisdom of Homer Simpson...
"55 MPH? That's ridiculous! Sure, they'll save a few lives. But millions will be late!"

10. They should have left earlier then.
Good thing you don't live in the 19th century. You would be late all the time.

And don't let silly things like laws get in your way.

13. thanks, any one in particular?
Guess I have a hard time discerning the difference between a $40 one and a $99 one when the features seem very similar

17. I haven't tried them myself, so I really couldn't say for sure...
I don't need one here. I live in a small town where I'm on a first name basis with the police because I feed them at my restaurant. When they see me going fast, they usually just flip me off and holler at me to slow down.

Instant on Radar/laser guns will still catch you everytime so don't think it is a cure all.

11. Thanks, but priced out of my league...
Certainly looks like a serious piece of gear, but $400+ is too rich for me right now. I know that's less than what a ticket and insurance hike might cost, but I think I might get by with something a bit more modestly priced.

14. how do you mean?
the one I had was a PNI (I think) and it seemed to work pretty well, in addition to picking up every automatic door in every drugstore.

I'm serious though... what makes them different in your experience? Maybe I can justify the cost..

15. RANGE
is the biggest factor, range and sensitivity. Also the direction finder and the ability to count the numbers of radars on different bands operating is invaluable.

The valentine 1 is also the ONLY radar detector I am aware of that is UNDETECTABLE by the police. Others leak so much they set off other radar detectors, and are also easily found by the police that have equipment to search for them.

7. Radar waves are building up in the atmosphere
Everybody is too scared to take on "big radar" but with one of these detectors, I can track down those who are emitting noxious radar into the atmosphere and do something or other...

9. My husband is a long haul truck driver and has no need for one...
He drives the speed limit. It's tough to do given his job, but he's managed very well with only one speeding ticket over the last ten years. That ticket was due to an overzealous trooper who ticketed him for three miles over the limit because my husband was going down a steep hill.

16. Experienced driver here - my recommendation...DON'T GET ONE!!
I had one for a few years in my younger days, and it made me feel invincible to the point where I figured I could never get pulled over. Sometime after I started using one, I got busted for speeding on several occasions and lost my license for 3 months!! Eventually, I just gave to it to my wife and decided to simply drive within the "9 mph allowance" cushion that most cops generally tolerate. Over that 15 or so year period, I've received one speeding ticket (passing a slower car going down a steep hill with a cop sitting at the bottom of the hill) and one verbal warning for speed (I was 10 mph over the limit).

Now, I've gotten into the whole "hypermiling" concept and have slowed down even further, and actually find it challenging (in a fun way) to see how fuel-efficient I can be. I actually exceeded 41 mpg on my last tankful driving a conventional (non-hybrid) Honda Accord, so it's not hype at all. I realize not everyone is in the position to just run out and buy something extremely fuel efficient, but we can all take steps to decrease our overall consumption.

18. Didn't take long for the Anti-Destination League to show up
I know it's a lot of change, but I really have to third the Valentine recommendation. If you are serious about locating the cops, the Valentine is the only one that will do it in each and every instance of you being clocked.

I am sure I don't need to say this, but ignore the naysayers. They apparently don't feel it an intrusion on our civil liberties that cops can hide and use technology to (inaccurately) gauge a vehicle's speed. After all, if you have nothing to hide...

20. I have the $40 Whistler that you can buy at Target or Walmart.
It works GREAT. I've had it for four years, and it's saved me countless times. I commute several times a week to work, 200 mile round trip. Yeah, sometimes I'll edge up to 75 in a 65. It gives me at least a 30 second notice most of the time. Even when the troopers keep their radar off and just zap individual drivers, it picks up on that.

I think that successfully avoiding speeding tickets is one-part radar detector, and two-parts intuition. I can almost "feel" them before I see them these days. Crazy sounding, I know, but people who ride with me laugh about my "smokey detector." :D
