I jus ordered Invisible Fence. Please tell me what you know about it. |
|
I should have checked here first but I didn't. I think it's pretty good, at least that's what friends who have it say. My two dogs have been bolting into the woods and staying away for 3-4 hours. They always come back but hunting season starts up here in 2 weeks and I think it will be dangerous for them. I've tried everything else.

1. Like anything it depends on the dog. |

I had one for the front yard, and it worked great for the Lab. The Huskies could care less about it (they have a high pain threshold I guess). Our German Shepard is also not that deterred if she wants to greet another dog.
Depends on your dogs.

5. You have to train them to the fence, but most dogs do pretty well. |
|
It's best if the yard's not too small.
If you have specific questions, please feel free to ask. I know people who work with an IF company.

Seems to work well. The big vicious barking dog never goes past it anyway.

11. Lots of people have them around here. |
|
I used one on a previous dog of mine when she was about six months old. She kept wiggling out of our fenced yard, so we put one up.
Six months later, she had her first epileptic seizure. I'm sure the two things weren't connected, but I'm still avoiding another invisible fence on the off-chance that it was related.
Now I have a so-not-invisible fence for my pooch. She's pretty lazy anyway.

They've had german shepards labs and other medium=sized dogs over the years. He lives out on a wooded lot in the county, same as me. It kept the dogs close to the house.

15. It won't keep a determined dog in |
|
if they want to go haring after game or a female in heat. It WILL keep them from coming back.
The biggest objection to them is that they will not deter other dogs without the collars, other animals or keep people off your property. Your dog becomes a target for mean kids and people who like to steal animals.
The best use I've seen for them is inside a physical fence to keep dogs from jumping the fence or getting close enough to be considered a danger to passersby.

I have one around 5 acres and it works great. I have two small dogs who wouldn't cross that line and take a shock if their lives depended on it. That said they do know it doesn't work without the collar so you have to be diligent putting it on every time they go outside. My niece has a large dog and a fence at her house and now her dog can come over to play and his collar works here too.
As far as training it only takes about a week and I suggest leaving the flags up that whole time. The unit should come with instructions as to how to train. If not go to the petsafe website and you can download them. My babies got it right away and only one ever voluntarily took a shock, once only, and then she has never tried again. The other dog was afraid of the flags and has never taken a shock.
Suggestions: The wire does break sometimes. Draw a diagram, with measurements of where you put it. buy wire ends (small grey ones) electrical tape, silicone, and wire strippers to make it easier. Keep the splices in the wire to a minimum, that is where the breaks usually happen. I laid the wire useing an stepping edger I had for my garden beds and it worked better than the electric edger I tried. Finally you need a paint stick to push the wire into the trench you make. It is really the only tool that works without breaking the wire.
Hope this helps! By the way I held the collar and walked through the boundry to make sure it would not hurt my dogs. It is like a strong static shock. They don't like it but it won't hurt them.

I have three pups on collars...my radio fence works GREAT!
I would recommend it to anyone who lives on a decent size lot, away from streets. Just be sure to change the batteries in the collar once a month!
