SPOILER DISCUSSED...anyone else see the film "Brazil?" |
|
I was watching it for the first time this past weekend and loved it! My problem is because of weather, my direct tv was messing up, and i could not watch the last 20 minutes....how oh how does it end??
(i checked the schedule of the sundance channel, and it's not due to come back on anytime soon...i thought i could wait it out, but trying to figure out how it ends is preoccupying way too much of my energy)

1. The last part is a rescue scene... |
|
Edited on Mon Aug-27-07 09:04 PM by Kutjara
...in which Jonathan Pryce's character rescues the girl and they make their escape. As they head off into the sunset, things begin to go awry, until finally it's revealed that the whole scene was a fantasy played out in Pryce's mind while being tortured into catatonia by Michael Palin's doctor. The final shot is of Pryce tied to a chair with a device affixed to his head, while Palin says something like, "he's gone." It's been about a decade since I last saw it, so my details may be a little off, but that's the gist.
You wouldn't expect Terry Gilliam to give you a happy ending, would you?

2. That depends on which version, as well. |
|
I think the US release was happied up, and the British one had the sad ending. I have only seen the Brit version, though.

I remember there was a big argument between Gilliam and the studio about that. In the end, Gilliam took out a full-page ad in Variety calling the studio a bunch of fuckheads (or words to that effect). I've never seen the "happy" version either, and hope I never do.

4. I agree, not the way it was meant to be seen. |
|
I can't remember if the US version was that way because of length or because the British version was considered too sad, or both. I think it was both.

7. I have all three versions or DVD |
|
With commentary from the director about the butchering of the end for American audiences.
It was definitely not because of the length; it was to give the requisite happy ending.

10. Yeah, I saw the original version in the theater and then saw the sappy version on cable. |

That has got to be one of the darkest visions of the future ever on screen. Thank you for reminding me of the end. Reminds me of the torture in Clockwork Orange, but in Brazil it's fatal.
