1. Um, wait a minute...
"Lucky that my breasts

Are small and humble

So you don't confuse

Them with mountains"

(Shakira)

Didn't Ghandi say that? What a rip-off!

3. the worst lyrics from the readers asked a question i've always wanted answered.
The Lyric-
"Your best friend Harry

Has a brother Larry

In five days from now

He's gonna marry

He's hopin' you can make it

There if you can

'Cause in the ceremony

You'll be the best man"

--Young MC's 'Bust A Move'

the question
Simplistic lyrics aside, why are you your best friend's brother's best man? Why didn't Harry ask Larry . . . or why doesn't Harry have his own best friend?
--Maggie, Fayetteville, Ga.

Seriously.

4. lol
I love that song. :)

flea plays bass on that. It's a classic. :hi:

I hate to see shakira on there though...those lyrics were written when she was just learning english, but it isn't the first song in which she mentions breast size which is a huge deal among women and therefore a legitimate topic. I've seen her slammed for that before and as much as penises are referred to in songs (mainly rap) I don't see what the problem is. She made a great rhyme for a non-english speaker. Same with the the Shania one they quoted, I thought that one was legitimate to. (just replying in general, too tired to make 2 posts, lol.)

6. That Shakira lyric
sounds much better in Spanish. Unfortunately, it didn't translate very gracefully into English.

7. all her songs do
I can't even listen to the english translations anymore now that I've heard all of them in spanish. Good for her that she refused to even try to translate "La Tortura", some things can't be carried into english, which is so non-melodic and monosyllabic compared to spanish, plus that song did amazingly well without being translated, and it would have lost a lot had someone tried.

However, I think there is nothing at all wrong with it in english, either; it's a perfect stanza with mumble/humble/fountain/mountains. Bernie Taupin could take lessons from her, lol. I think people just aren't used to women talking about their physical insecurities but it doesn't make it wrong, she did it again in "Tango" and in one song she says something like 'y cellulitis invada sus piernas', lol, which is something american women don't really sing about except in rap songs. I think it makes her innovative.

8. Yeah
I never heard the Oral Fixation Vol II album so I don't know if she completely refrained from translating the songs on the first album but I think she's better off writing two separate sets of songs in both languages.

11. I didn't buy it either.
The Spanish speaking fans are definitely getting the better deal (or fans of her Spanish songs). We get "La Tortura" and the English language fans get "Hips dont' Lie" which was like the Britneyfication of Shakira...I don't think I've ever been able to force myself to sit through the whole thing, I can't stand it.

14. Very true
I'm quite happy with Fijacion Oral. From the English-language songs I've heard on the radio, I don't feel I'm missing out on much.

5. That list is mistaken because it doesn't include The Turtles' "Eleanor"
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 03:22 PM by SteppingRazor
"Eleanor, gee, I think you're swell.

You're my pride and joy, et cetera."

Seriously? Et cetera? I'm sure Eleanor feels real special.

10. Other than missing Steve Miller's "Pompatus of love," it's a pretty good list.
I was especially glad to see the McCartney lyric included. That one's been driving me nuts for years.

15. The list is a sham - there should have been at least 3 Steve Miller songs on it.

Also:

"abracadabra = reach out and grab ya"

"Texas" = "facts is"

16. Good points.
The lyrics on the list are worthy of entry, but as you point out there are some glaring omissions.

12. They missed the UTTER WORST, also from McCartney:
"Somebody's knocking on the door,
Somebody's ringing the bell,
Do me a favor,
Open the door,
And let them in."

What a fucking musical genius Sir McCartney is, yes?

13. What, no mention of "MacArthur Park"?
MacArthur Park is melting in the dark
All the sweet, green icing flowing down
Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no!

I mean, the 70s were certainly full of its share of crappy music.
