My dog has pancreatitis :(
She can't eat solids right now and she seems to be in a lot of pain. Plus Alberto Gonzales keeps trying to get her to approve illegal wiretaps.

Any good vibes would be most appreciated.

 Sending healing vibes to your sweet dog - she is adorable, and I hope she gets well soon! :pals:

(I know I shouldn't, but your Gonzales comment made me laugh. :) Let's hope he stays well away from your dog, sick or not!)

Any pain killers involved? Poor thing, very cute dog.

6. I'm keeping her hydrated with water and chicken broth
The doctor is hesitant to give painkillers since she's 13 1/2 and she would require hospitalization if she gets them. Right now she seems to be doing OK but I'll take her in if she gets worse.

Thanks for you concern.

9. pancreatitis
I don't mean to alarm you but this is a serious condition. My sheltie has had it 3 times and almost died the last time. You should have your dog at the vet on IV fluids until her enzymes are normal - could take a week. Please get your dog to the vet pronto. This is a very painful and dangerous condition. My vet didn't even want my dog near food smells - that alone is enough to release the pancreatic enzymes and they basically digest the pancreas.

Good luck to you.

10. She's seen the vet, and her enzymes aren't bad enough to warrant hospitalization
She's taking fluids by mouth and well-hydrated. The hospital is 5 minutes away and open 24 hours if she gets worse. Right now, the vet is trying to keep her out of the hospital if possible. She's going in tomorrow for a re-check, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Of course, I have no experience with this and little experience with dogs (I adopted her last year when she was 12 1/2). If you think that I'm getting bad advice, please let me know.

11. Sounds like you are on top of it. Hydration is key.. But the fact she is an oldster
is reason to remain vigilant. Awful nice of you to adopt an old gal.

12. Right now I feel pretty powerless (gross stuff in this post)
Even though she hasn't eaten for 36 hours, she's still having these disgusting tarry poos which she isn't really able to control (I've changed my bed twice and mopped the entire upstairs floor 3 times -- including once @ 4 this morning). She hasn't been vomiting at all which the vet thinks is a good sign.

She just seems so miserable. I guess this is where the phrase "sick as a dog" comes from. :(

18. tarry stool
As long as the vet knows about the stools and is monitoring her enzymes that is about all you can do. I am a little surprised your vet has not given your dog some fluids either by IV or under the skin. I would ask about that. I hope your furry friend feels better soon.

Tarry stools can be caused by gastro intestinal bleeding. Diarrhea is pretty common with pancreatitis. Just keep in touch with the vet.

13. Our dog had pancreatitis a few months back
She fully recovered. She spent two nights in the AH, was on an IV and painkillers. Once the big gas bubble that commonly forms passed, she responded well and improved quickly.

Sounds like you are taking good care of your friend.

15. My cat, Sophia, had this last winter.
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 06:23 PM by mycritters2
She was miserable. Oddly, ever since then there's only one cat food she can keep down. I was afraid she was going to starve to death, because she puked up everything I gave her. Until she tore open a bag of Wysong food, gorged herself on it (while I wasn't looking) and kept it down. Now, it's all she can eat. But she's doing well. But when she was sick, she was REALLY, REALLY sick!!

I hope your baby does as well as Sophia!! :hi:

17. poor baby, my dog has that too
it's awful for them.

if they haven't already, your vet will probably have you put her on a low fat diet (when she is feeling better).

her face is so sweet, i'll send her good thoughts.

gonna go hug my big babies now!

24. My dog had pancreatitis in the last few years of his life
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 11:34 PM by socialdemocrat1981
Poor guy -he had to be at the vet's on a drip for about a week before he was allowed to return home. After that we put him on a strict diet of predominantly rice, vegetables and meat. He lasted another five years after that -I should mention that he was already 11 yrs by the time he got pancreatitis so he was 16 when he passed away. He was a lot healthier in those last few years on his new diet

One thing you may have to watch for -when in the future you are perscribed medication for various ailments, you'll need to investigate whether it will have a negative impact on her stomach and his pancreas. Our dog was perscribed medication for various ailments and one or two of the medications had an impact on his pancreas -in fact we believe that the last medication we gave him for his arthiritis may have had a dehabilitating effect on his stomach and/or pancreas that caused him incredible pain on the last day of his life:cry:

27. She's hanging in there
I was waiting to post an update until the news was uniformly good, but she seems to be slowly improving. She's still not on solid food, still not able to control her bowels and not taking anything that I don't pump into her mouth with a syringe.

However, she shows some signs of returning friskiness, her fever is down and she hasn't vomited at all (which is very encouraging). She's just started on an intestinal anti-inflammatory to calm down her diarrhea, and tomorrow she's going to get her first bite of solid food in 72 hours.

It doesn't sound that great but trust me, this is a huge improvement over where we were on Monday when I thought she wasn't going to make it through the night.

Thanks again to everyone for your encouragement and support. :grouphug:
