Have you ever dreamt that you did something horrible?
A couple of times I've dreamt that I killed someone. And the other night I dreamt I was in jail, though I had no idea why.
Waking from these nightmares is such a relief; yet I feel guilty for a good part of the day. :-(

5. I find it really disturbing, because while awake,
I'd never even entertain the notion of harming someone...though I might daydream of some enemy being hurt by someone else.

I've thought about it, and have taken steps toward it, but something always stopped me.
Of course, this was years ago. I only go there in my head very infrequently. But the dreams were disturbing and I was freaked out upon waking up. The guilt, the relief, and the guilt again follwed my for the rest of the day.

But even recognizing it as a dream I feel out-of-sorts for awhile.

I need to incorporate meditation in my dream state, I think. :-)

4. I dreamed three years ago that I poisoned a guy at a church function
because his wife, on whom I had a crush, asked me to.

That dream still haunts me - I have vivid memory in the dream of taking out a vial of poison of some kind and dripping it into a glass of lemonade or tea and handing it to him. I also have a vivid memory that as I handed it to him I had a feeling of "Well, I'm now committed to it - he's really going to die, and I will always have a chance of being caught" and a feeling of fear and emptiness, a sickness of my stomach dropping into the abyss, as I watched him die, realizing that I had crossed a very immoral line, but mixed with an also small sense of triumph that I had that much power, and that the fact that I now was to gain the reward of his wife was irrelevant. Triumph isn't the right word - satisfaction, maybe; or perhaps whatever feeling of power/thrill/self-esteem-boosting it is that serial murderers get that makes them want to murder again. And a sense that I kind of, almost, liked it, and might just do it again, though next time for no purpose other than to prove I am not powerless.

I hate that dream, and I wish it would go away. For months, it felt so real that I many times was almost convinced that it really happened and my stomach would churn and I felt awful. I don't get that any more, but the memory of of my feelings in that dream hasn't faded at all.

It's alright - it's always there even if you don't mention it. On the good side,
since I felt so bad in the dream it's a good bet that if I did it in real life I'd also probably feel kind of bad about it. On the downside, it doesn't seem that the bad feeling would be enough to keep me from doing it again.

Oh, well.

14. No, not really
I do have one recurring dream. I'm at college, and coming to the end of a semester, and realize I haven't been to a single class or done a single assignment, and it's finals week. I've actually awakened in a cold sweat from this.

Another variation is that I get to the end of a semester, take out my official schedule and realize I was registered for a class I completely forgot about.

I wonder what these mean? It's been a LONG time since I was in college.

But no, my dream life, like my waking life is far too boring to include anything as interesting as murder or jail.

42. I get the college exam one all the time
It's usually some horribly hard class - like organic chemistry - I forgot to attend and study. I also get the one in which I'm doing the lead in a play, but I never rehearsed and discover at the last minute on opening night that the play is in Polish...that and the one where I'm naked at my High School prom.

Yup, I frequently dream I've done something illegal - not murder, fortunately - because it completely slipped my mind that I shouldn't do it. "Oh, crap! I'm not a surgeon! Why am I getting ready to take out this guy's appendix? Do you think if I ran out of the OR yelling something about leaving the iron on, anyone would notice?"

21. A couple of times. I don't remember killing someone, but I had already killed them in the dream.
The first time was in high school. I dreamed that I had killed a former chemistry teacher (who I liked). I don't remember the killing part, and it might not have been part of the dream. I remember the fear, the hopelessness, the knowledge that I would have to hide it, or run. I remember in the dream that when people spoke to me, I knew what I had done and felt that every word I said about anything was a lie. I had let everyone down. Most of all, I knew what people would think of me if they knew, and that I was therefore really like that, even though they weren't thinking it yet. And yet, I realized it was just something I had done, not something I was, and felt like people misunderstood what killing really was like.

It took days to shake the emotions of that dream when I woke up. I questioned everything about myself, and felt the emotions even when awake.

I had a similar dream a couple years ago, but I didn't know the person I killed (not in real life, I knew them in the dream), and the feeling only lingered until I shook the sleep off. Nowhere near as personal. I don't know if the dream wasn't as vivid, or I was just old enough to deal with it.

I was never aware of whom I'd killed in my dreams...just as I wasn't aware of what crime I'd committed in the dream I had the other night.

I don't know how terrible you consider this, but I have had sex with lots of people who I shouldn't in dreams. Some of them are people who consciously I don't think I'd want to have sex with.

26. I have very occasionally had "adultery dreams"
which I guess isn't exactly killing anyone, but I'll be having it off with a random someone and just before I wake up I'll think, "but I'm (married, dating, remarried--I've had them off and on through I few cycles)" and then I feel a little like "I have a secret" the next day.

I chased a certain person I positively loathe into a public bathroom and smashed their head open against one of the sinks. Really freaking graphic.

34. One of mine was really graphic like that...
though I didn't know the person, I split his skull open.

In the other, I dreamt I'd hit someone with a car then driven home with blood all over the bumper of my car. That one was kind of interesting, because I put myself into a state of denial in the dream, then remembered what I'd done and went outside to look at my car, and found there wasn't a dent on it. As I woke, it slowly dawned on me that it was all a dream.

it is haunting and at times I really feel that it wasn't a dream and that I AM guilty of what happened in that dream. It's such a relief when I realize that it was only a dream - but I don't know where it came from and I wish I hadn't had that particular dream.

Relatively harmless things, like forgetting to take care of a bill, or spending too much money, or sneaking cigarettes when we're supposed to have quit. Maybe we carry that guilt into the dream state.

It was an underground colony, and all of my remaining friends and family were inside. I destroyed it because I had a petty dispute with one person, and then calmly strolled back in, started digging in the rubble, and pretended to be a survivor.

I couldn't look anyone in the eyes for a week.

Nobody was killed; but I'd have dreams where the brakes wouldn't work, or my steering would be out of control. I'm sure you're a careful, considerate driver in real life as well as in your dreams. That counts for a lot when you're on the road.
