Amy Winehouse - your thoughts?
Edited on Tue Aug-28-07 09:00 PM by Taverner
I like her - and I worry she's the next Joplinesque tragedy to befall Rock and Roll...

On Edit: her singing voice gives me goosebumps.

Since 1994 or so, I think. Maybe longer.

And her album is one of the best of the year, if not the best.

8. The production on every song sounds exactly the same, and she'll be dead by the end of the year.
Okay, the second one isn't for certain, but seems likely, unfortunately.

As for the first, it's okay for the first track or two, then just gets boring, at least for me.

67. yeah I am getting sick of that song too
wish my progressive, eclectic community station :eyes: (good late night and weekend - sucky daytime shows) would play something else so I could get a feel for what else she does.

The voice is kind of intriguing, but I am tired of the same song.

Sadly, this is how rock stardom is. Get a few great songs and a following.....die......you are a legend.

Get a few great songs........put out as few mediocre ones......slip off the charts......come back for some nostalga......end up at the state fair playing along with REO Speedwagon and a Styx tribute band.

Went of U of Michigan, which is not an easy school to get into at all. And she's always led a very healthy lifestyle.

But these folks like Winehouse pay to only be surrounded by yes-men. In instances like these honestly the paparazzi might be doing these folks like her Britney, Lohan a favor because they might get a wake up call from the negative press. They sure aren't gonna get one anywhere else.

I've heard 'Rehab' several times, but that's the extent of it.

Based solely on that song, my one word opinion of Amy Winehouse is 'gimmick'

That's probably a premature judgement, as I'm sure the rest of her catalogue is nothing like that one song...

Unlike Britney, Lindsay and Paris.

I like her music. You see how she evolved (musically) from Frank to Back to Black - also the best song on the disque. So we might as well enjoy what she'd produced so far, because it's possible there might not be anymore.

73. I feel exactly the same way.
I see an actress, rather than an artist. She's 23 and believe me if she surives the hell she's put herself in right now, she will have PLENTY of emotional material to draw from. The fact is that white Londoner singing with that inflection that is not authentic is acting. She's imitating what comes naturally to the black artists in her category. She does it very well, but it is not real, and a tad disrespectful I feel. If she does survive, I think she will eventually morph into someone with a tale of her own to tell and an authentic style.

And that is not a good thing - Torch Queens (Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Sandy Denny) always die in their prime, adding a certain amount of sadness to their mystique. People going through a breakup may get more comfort, but that the risk of poor Amy's life...I hope she gets off the train headed directly to the "Stupid Club" (as Cobain's mom used to call it)

66. Unlike Lohan, Spears and Hilton - Amy's the real thing
That voice just exudes sorrow - besides you don't almost snuff it by ODing on heroin and drink for ratings.

And unlike the Wanna Be Divas, she can actually sing. And write. And by write, I mean words other than "that's hot"

68. It's not marketing. I saw a picture of her husband after their latest
public fight.

She had gone after him with a razor blade and he had several very bad scratches all over his face. Not fake scratches...real rather serious-looking scratches.

You don't practically disfigure your own husband for publicity. The girl has real problems, and needs help.

71. I love her music. She's very talented. I hope she recovers and gets better.

She's on a complete downward spiral now and it is so sad to watch.

 Best wishes to Amy. I hope her husband will get rehabbed and help her.

Tears Dry Own Their Own is my favorite Amy Winehouse song. It's beautiful and sad.

72. Flippin' through the channels and comin' across "Rehab" I...
stops and sez "Holy Shit! Who is this?" I don't do that very often.

Not big on modern overproduced and underperformed studio stuff that passes for music these days, I still hadda stop and check this out.

Whatever the eventual judgment of her music, "Rehab" is one hell of an earworm.
